Contact Information: Membership and General Inquiries
The Pioneer Activity Center is available for contact, though prospective community members should be mindful of the in-person requirement for membership and potential variability in front desk assistance times.
Address: 1 University Plaza, Platteville, WI 53818, USA
Phone: (608) 342-1568 (General PAC Office)
It is important to note that Membership is required to use the facility. Based on current practices and customer feedback, all memberships—including community, day passes, and semester options—must be purchased in-person at the Welcome Desk using a credit card, debit card, or cash. While the website provides general information, the membership purchase process itself is exclusively conducted on-site.
What is Worth Choosing: College-Grade Facilities at Community Prices
For Wisconsin locals, especially those residing in or near Platteville, the Pioneer Activity Center is overwhelmingly worth choosing because it provides access to a top-tier, university-level athletic complex at truly competitive community rates. The sheer scale and quality of the facility are well above the par of most smaller, private gyms in the region.
The primary draw is the extensive, recently expanded weight room, perfect for serious lifters, and the multiple courts and indoor track, which are invaluable during the long Wisconsin winters. The indoor swimming pool is a major feature, offering year-round aquatic fitness opportunities that are often difficult to find locally. The fact that the gym is constantly updating its equipment (including a significant $250,000 investment since 2022) means members are always working out on modern, high-functioning machines.
However, an honest assessment must also address the user-reported inconvenience regarding membership. While the cost is a great deal, the process of securing a membership is noted as being unnecessarily frustrating, requiring an in-person visit with no guarantee of immediate assistance at the desk. This is a point of friction that community members should plan for: be prepared to make an initial dedicated trip during staffed hours to finalize your membership.
Despite this administrative hurdle, the value proposition remains exceptionally strong. The PAC offers a massive, clean, well-equipped, and physically accessible environment for total body wellness. For those who prioritize diverse workout options, a large dedicated training space, and the unique combination of a gymnasium, track, and pool under one roof, the Pioneer Activity Center represents the best fitness investment in the Platteville area. It's where the local community can leverage the resources of the university to achieve a stronger, healthier self.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is not a community resource. The website is frequently broken and frustrating to use. The only way to get a membership is to show up in person, which is already a bit of a pain when the website says you should be able to purchase a membership through it, but there's no guarantee someone will be there to help you. I showed up and no one was manning the desk for the 45 minutes I waited. I called on the phone for assistance in getting a membership and was told I needed to come in. I told them I didn't know when someone would be there, and their response was, "well I'm here right now," not seeming to understand I would like to make a plan farther in advance than "right now."So sure, it's probably great for the students. It's close, they can access it easily. I'm pretty sure it's a great deal as far as fees to use a gym goes. But I think calling it a community resource is really inaccurate.
October 18 · Lydia HorneHigh quality gym and facility. The gym just had a new add on to the weight room and added a running track and basketball courts. The pool locker rooms are less than desirable as they offer very little privacy for changing. Otherwise the rest of the facility is utterly fantastic and well above par of most.
March 13 · William TGreat facilities with lots of options especially in the weight room, but way too many rules - no tank tops? Seriously? Track is Counterclockwise on one day, clockwise on another… feels like a bit much.
January 25 · Sara MeyersCrowded with strict rules. You're not allowed to wear tank tops (I would LOVE to hear the explanation for why they enforce this). So if you don't mind sweating to death in a t-shirt, then it's a decent place.
November 02 · SarahWent here for grandson's college graduation. Very nice facility.
