This studio offers a unique experience, centered on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, and is dedicated to providing meticulous instruction for students of all levels, from absolute beginners to seasoned practitioners.

The core principle of the Iyengar method is that through careful and specific attention to alignment, the body can be brought into balance, which in turn harmonizes the mind and spirit. As one long-time student noted, this is not a class where you are an "anonymous participant" simply following a beat. Instead, the classes are "tailored to the specific students in the class," with teachers who are deeply "in-tune with her students." This personalized approach, as a customer mentioned, allows for a practice with "awareness and health," fostering a strong and mindful foundation.

When considering a yoga studio in the Pittsburgh area, the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Pittsburgh stands out for several key reasons, making it an excellent choice for a variety of individuals. The most compelling reason is its unwavering dedication to the integrity and therapeutic benefits of the Iyengar method. In a crowded wellness market, this studio provides a practice that is both safe and profoundly effective. The emphasis on proper alignment and the use of props not only prevents injury but also teaches students to truly understand their own body mechanics, a skill that translates into all aspects of daily life. As one long-time student articulated, this practice helped her to "have the technique to do the flow with awareness and health" in other yoga classes. This focus on foundational knowledge and technique is invaluable for both beginners and experienced yogis.
Furthermore, the personalized attention offered at IYIP creates an environment that is both nurturing and challenging. In an age of large, impersonal classes, the sense of being "seen" and receiving modifications tailored to one's specific needs is a significant advantage. This level of individualized care is particularly beneficial for those with injuries or physical limitations, as the studio's yoga therapists and knowledgeable teachers can create a practice that is healing and restorative. This is a place where you can anticipate "skill growth at the level you find comfortable," rather than feeling pressured to keep up with the crowd.
Finally, the strong sense of community and the high level of professionalism among the teachers make IYIP a truly special place. As a student of ten years remarked, the studio is "almost like a second home," providing "peace, acceptance, and skill growth." This atmosphere is a direct result of the teachers' expertise and their compassionate approach to instruction. The commitment to teacher certification also means that all instructors are rigorously trained, ensuring that every class is of the highest quality. For any resident of Pennsylvania looking for more than just a workoutโwho wants a practice that will foster self-awareness, improve overall health, and provide a supportive communityโthe Iyengar Yoga Institute of Pittsburgh is an investment in long-term well-being that is truly worth choosing.

โ 5โ 4โ 3โ 2โ 1I have been a loyal student of Christina at IYIP for going on 4 years now. This work is so powerful, and Christina is an absolute pro. She is extremely knowledgeable and so in-tune with her students. You absolutely feel seen here. In the Iyengar tradition, we are each working on our specific technique. This is not a room where the teacher sets a beat, and we all just go through the asana as anonymous participants. Every moment of the class is tailored to the specific students in the class. Every modification for every body type, size, and ableness is always front and center.I enjoy a good "flow" class at a standard studio, but I would never be able to appreciate that work or have the technique to do the flow with awareness and health were it not for the Iyengar practice. The Iyengar method is careful, specific, slow, and deeply concerned with the specific bodies in the room. I can't recommend it enough. If you want to REALLY understand what all this yoga stuff is about, you need to spend some time at IYIP. High Recommend. ๐๐๐๐๐งโโ๏ธ
January 24 ยท Stephen NeelyI have been going to this yoga studio for at least ten years. The teachers are skilled and very knowledgeable. It is an extremely welcoming environment for the beginner and the seasoned student. The studio is beautiful and well-equipped with all you need for the Iyengar method. I have seen remarkable change in students' general health on many occasions. Everyone is welcome. It's almost like a second home where one can anticipate peace, acceptance, and skill growth at the level you find comfortable. So grateful I landed here way back when.
July 11 ยท Danielle BaumBecause I am over 60, I take supported yoga when I can. The instructors are so kind, caring & patient!I got a great work out there and felt welcome. Unfortunately it's a bit of a drive for me and life got in the way. I would love to start back, but need to find a good time that fits my schedule. Compared to other studios, Yoga on Centre is affordable and worth the effort!
January 13 ยท Cathi BookIf you're a beginner, the teachers at Yoga on Centre will get your yoga practice off to a great start with their focus on your alignment and your understanding of the relationship between your body, your mind and the yoga postures. If you are more established in your practice and, like me, have picked up some bad habits from other teachers or you have some deep blockages and misunderstandings that are impeding your progress but you can't seem to get past, the teachers can help you identify these issues and unlock them.I had a consistent practice for about 5 years before going to Yoga on Centre and considered myself a serious student, but after 2 years I have come face to face with very deep issues where previously I had only empty space. My awareness and ability have grown through the unique insight and instruction compassionately shared by each teacher at Yoga on Centre. Highly recommended!
May 21 ยท Peter GilgunnThe Iyengar Yoga Institute of Pittsburgh is one of the few studios continuing to offer high quality yoga instruction on a daily basis. In spite of covid-19, IYIP has moved to a online streaming model which is easy to use - 24 hour class passes are available, which allow students to take as many classes as they wish during that 24 hour time period (about 2-3 classes offered per day, depending on the schedule). Since these yoga classes are streamed, I have been able to communicate my personal needs to my yoga teachers, such as if I have an injury and need modifications for the class that day. I am also able to get feedback from my teachers if I have any questions about the practice.Words cannot describe how much I appreciate the work that is done at Iyengar Yoga Institute of Pittsburgh. All of the teachers are extremely knowledgeable in yoga. They specialize in differentiating class for students with a wide variety of needs. If you are hesitant about starting or continuing your yoga practice from home, this is a great place to start. Contact Sara if you have questions!
