Woodling Gymnasium Introduce
In the heart of Cleveland, Ohio, the Woodling Gymnasium stands as a historic and multifaceted athletic facility on the campus of Cleveland State University (CSU). More than just a simple gym, it is a comprehensive physical education center that has served as a central hub for CSU athletics for decades. The facility, named after former Fenn College and Cleveland State coach Homer E. Woodling, has been a cornerstone of the university's sports programs since its opening in 1973. While it has a storied past as the former home of the Cleveland State Vikings basketball team, it continues to be a vibrant space for a variety of collegiate sports. The gymnasium is an integral part of the larger Physical Education Center, which is a key component of the university's commitment to health and wellness. For those in the Cleveland area, Woodling Gymnasium represents a unique blend of historical significance and modern-day utility. It is a place where you can find a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, and spaces dedicated to multiple sports teams, all under one roof. The facility's ability to host competitive athletic events, from wrestling to volleyball, while also serving the broader athletic and recreational needs of the campus community, is a testament to its versatility and enduring value. The environment is one of serious athletic training and competition, offering an opportunity to experience collegiate sports firsthand or to simply enjoy a rigorous workout in a well-equipped space.
The gymnasium has not been immune to the passage of time, and in recent years, the university has made a significant effort to enhance the facility for the benefit of both its student-athletes and fans. Initiatives have been launched to secure funds for a variety of improvements, including new lighting, a sound system, and upgrades to locker rooms and academic spaces. These ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to modernizing the facility and improving the overall experience for everyone who uses it. While it may not be a public, commercial gym in the traditional sense, its role as a university-owned facility means it serves a specific and crucial purpose for student-athletes and the university community. It’s a place of dedicated practice, training, and competition. This focus on collegiate athletics gives the gymnasium a unique character and a high level of intensity that many fitness enthusiasts may find motivating. It is a no-nonsense facility where the primary goal is athletic excellence and performance, which is a different atmosphere than a typical community-run gym. The presence of collegiate-level sports, such as the CSU v. KSU wrestling match mentioned in a review, adds to its prestige and offers a chance to be part of the local sports culture. While one review seems to be misplaced, describing a grocery store instead of a gym, the mention of a specific athletic event confirms its identity as a hub for collegiate sports in Cleveland.

November 26 · CCCSU v. KSU wrestling match
February 24 · Dan MooreVery clean and well maintained place. I go for Aerobic Walking classes every week. We can reach the walking ramps through the stairs on the sides. Very big basket ball ground. Cool place to see great games.
October 31 · Vignesh ArivarasuThis gym has a good track for running that is typically empty. It is elevated, so it is not for those who are afraid of heights and the corners are slopped, so it may be harder on the knees and ankles then most other tracks. This is also a general purpose facility, which has many sports use its space for their practices. If you are interested in volleyball or fencing in particular, this is a good place to find these teams and learn more about them and their schedules. This is also the access point for audiences for the swimming pool.
August 31 · John ZoidbergExcellent court facilities. The curtained area for the volleyball team was interesting. Are there not locker rooms?
