★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have a huge respect for the staff and their practice at Uptown Movement. They are very welcoming and supportive with new folks, and their focus in classes and coaching on the quality and the feel of movement, with lots of feedback, has been effective. I feel great training in the gym, even though I don’t have a ton of prior experience. But I’ve been even more surprised by the ways that other activities, like bicycling around the city, running errands and carrying things, and just sitting and moving during my day, feel more balanced, more engaged, and stronger since beginning this work.
August 07 · Johan GrimsrudUptown Movement is an incredible gym for all experience levels. The movement techniques taught in classes are life skills that everyone should learn. This gym has positively changed the way I thought about myself and helped me create a community support. Highly recommend for anyone who has felt excluded from or burned by gym experiences in the past.
August 12 · Claire ZimmermanI decided to join Uptown Movement a little bit more than a year ago because I was feeling really down and defeated after a series of personal problems (my therapist suggested it) and at age 57, this has been indeed a life changing experience for me.Before I started, Eoghan set up an personal appointment with me to better understand my needs and was so welcoming, understanding and gentle. I was emotionally exhausted and I immediately felt that Uptown Movement would be a place where I would be able to heal mentally and physically and it has been the case in so many ways.Classes are the least pretentious that you could imagine. The instructors are super nice, super attentive to each individual (classes are rarely more than 10 or 12 participants), and super encouraging as well. The mood is focused but there are many fun moments. There are no mirrors in the room, which encourages you to turn your attention inward, to that particular sensation when you activate this specific muscle, to your balance, etc.Classes often integrate an element of play, which has forced me to reactivate some neural pathways that had been dormant since I was 7, and this has been exhilarating. There is also a lot of focus on flexibility, movement, fluidity, coordination and the ability to execute series of different movements, often inspired from the animal realm, which again is profoundly rejuvenating.I love the "Foundations" level that has allowed me to basically reconnect with my body while also slowly but surely push my limits. It's all about body awareness and after a few weeks I could already feel that I was standing or sitting differently, and that I was already stronger. (I usually go to 3 classes a week).I feel so much more "grounded" now and honestly, my plan is to continue with Uptown Movement for as long as I live in the neighborhood. You can't reverse age, but these classes make me feel so young and confident in the future.
June 18 · EricI am thrilled I found this amazing gym. I mostly swim and do yoga, but since I’m a woman over 50, my doctor has told me I need to lift weights and do other types of strength training. But I have a hard time doing it on my own – it just seems so boring compared to other sorts of exercise. But Uptown Movement changed this for me. I signed up for the unlimited classes, and I went 2-3 times a week. I’ve been at it for about two years now, and the difference in my overall fitness and well-being is huge. There is a friendliness to this place, an openness to great diversity in terms of age, race, sexuality, body size and type, language, etc. that is immensely appealing. I like the coaches and my classmates (mostly women) enough to make me want to go. The emphasis is never on how one looks or losing weight – it's always on increasing mobility and strength, especially as one ages. Before I started taking these classes, I had back problems (especially when picking up my 70-pound dog to bathe her), and I often sprained an ankle (weakened by a bad injury in my youth) and sometimes fell (my dog pulls me a lot). For the last 2 years, I haven’t sprained my ankle, haven’t been injured falling (and have hardly ever fallen at all), and more. And I can now deadlift my weight. In sum, I think this gym is great, and I encourage you to do your body (and mind) a great favor and join.
August 07 · Deborah LutzThis gym is a win! It’s impossible to not feel good after attending one of the different fitness classes they offer. Each class is challenging but encouraging, and has a variety of exercises and lifts to learn and work on. The coaches are stalwart professionals, engaging and attentive; and classmates bring an all-in-it-together vibe.As someone with very little experience in gyms—my lone, brief gym membership was back in the mid-90’s—I think Uptown Movement was a perfect place to come back in and feel comfortable learning all about ‘kettlebell skills’ and ‘strength and mobility’ (the fitness world has evolved a lot since my day!) This gym meets you where you’re at on your fitness journey - whether you’re a seasoned vet or a gym newbie like me, Uptown Movement is the place be.
