The Pilates Movement Introduce
In a city as dynamic and fast-paced as New York, finding a fitness studio that not only meets your physical needs but also nurtures a sense of community is a rare find. The Pilates Movement, located in the heart of the Upper East Side, is just such a place. This women-owned business is a sanctuary for individuals seeking to improve their strength, flexibility, and overall well-being through the transformative power of Pilates. With a strong emphasis on proper form and personalized attention, the studio caters to a diverse clientele, from absolute beginners to seasoned practitioners. This article will provide an in-depth look at what makes The Pilates Movement a standout choice for anyone in the New York area looking for a high-quality, supportive, and inclusive fitness experience.
The foundation of The Pilates Movement's success lies in the expertise and dedication of its owner, Jen, and her team of instructors. As one long-time client who has been with the studio since 2018 notes, Jen evaluates every new client on their first visit, instilling a sense of confidence and trust from the very beginning. This hands-on approach ensures that any personal concerns or health issues are understood and addressed. The instructors are consistently praised for being "all excellent" with regard to "proper form and technique." This commitment to precision is what truly sets the studio apart, as it helps clients avoid injury and get the maximum benefit from every exercise.
The studio’s ability to adapt to clients' needs is another key feature. As highlighted in a review, instructors ask how clients are feeling before each class and are ready to provide "alternative ways of doing the exercises" if something is bothering them. This level of personalized care is crucial, particularly for those who may be dealing with existing health challenges. One client, who was struggling with such challenges, found that the instructors "helped me get stronger and build my core," a testament to their knowledge and supportive approach.
Even with the challenges of recent times, The Pilates Movement has maintained its high standards. The studio quickly transitioned to virtual classes, ensuring that clients could continue their practice from the comfort of their homes. This flexibility is a huge benefit for New Yorkers with busy schedules. As a client shared, they now take "2-3 classes a week virtually" and have stuck with the instructors they enjoy most, proving that the online experience is just as engaging and effective. The studio has also recently been renovated, offering a fresh and inviting space for those who prefer onsite services.
Beyond the technical aspects, The Pilates Movement fosters a welcoming and inclusive community. The business identifies as women-owned, and a "Transgender safespace" that is "LGBTQ+ friendly," creating an environment where everyone can feel safe and respected. This is particularly important for a mind-body practice like Pilates, where feeling at ease is essential for a productive session. The personal attention—including the owner's commitment to "juggling appointments, installing new equipment and checking in with her clients"—makes every person feel valued and seen. This is a place where clients feel a genuine connection with their instructors and fellow practitioners, making the fitness journey not just about physical change, but about building meaningful connections.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I live on the Upper East Side and have been going to The Pilates Movement since 2018. The owner, Jen, evaluates everyone on their first visit. I felt confident in her ability to address and understand any concerns I might have. Something very important to me was proper form and technique. The Pilates Movement instructors are all excellent in that regard. Before any class starts, we are asked how our bodies are feeling and, if there is anything going on, we are given alternative ways of doing the exercises. I have been taking a private lesson with Jen since the start and look forward to it every week. When we were in the studio, prior to COVID, the small classes were wonderful. The individual attention was also very important to me. Since COVID, I don't get into the studio very often (although it was just renovated and am looking forward to checking it out). Currently, I take 2-3 classes a week virtually and stick to the 3 different instructors I like for each class. Each instructor offers something a little different and makes the class fun and interesting. I highly recommend The Pilates Movement.
April 06 · Ina HasdayI never did Pilates before my first session at The Pilates Movement but fell in love with it immediately. I’ve had private sessions with several different instructors and they are all amazing! I was struggling with some health challenges and the instructors helped me get stronger and build my core. I’ve been a client of The Pilates Movement for a few years now…Jen runs a great business and she is on top of everything; jugging appointments, installing new equipment and checking in with her clients. She hires only the best instructors who are very knowledgeable, professional and attentive. I highly recommend this Pilates studio
May 14 · Marlene “city and country” GreenfieldA friend recommended Pilates Movement and it is great! A small studio, you get individual attention. The instructors are all trained in classic Pilates and know what they are doing. Classes have only 3 students and can be tower or reformer. Or you can take a private. I walk straighter and have had no back issues since I have started. And I’m doing exercises I couldn’t do when I first started! Im so glad I found this small studio. The instructors are fantastic!
May 14 · Lynn HamlinRecently a woman of a certain age saw me walking and thanked me, also a woman of a certain age, for reminding her to stand up straight. I said "it's pilates." So sign up at The Pilates Movement. Excellent instructors, in studio or zoom. Worth every penny.
June 21 · Maralyn EdidAMAZING VIRTUAL PILATES CLASS. the perfect amount of challenge combined with deep stretching in between exercises. I feel honored to have taken a class with Jesolyn, such an experienced instructor, with 30+ years of teaching (and it shows, hah!) Through out the class she made sure all the students were performing the exercises properly and she corrected our form if needed. She also gave modifications to tailor to each individual student. I highly recommend this studio, specifically, Jesolyn’s virtual mat class. Thank you!!!
