It serves as a specialized gym and personal training center designed for the athletic-minded individual—from high-level competitors to those simply serious about a fitness regimen tailored precisely to their body.
What truly sets The Lab apart is the integration of high-level personal training with expert physical therapy knowledge. The owner, Cole Johnston, is a certified Doctor of Physical Therapy (PT, DPT), which brings a profound level of insight to training, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. This unique credential means that clients receive customized training plans that not only chase athletic or fitness goals but also address underlying mobility issues, body pain, and recovery needs with precision.
The culture is defined by its focus on intentional programming, expert coaching, and real, measurable results. It is described as a super clean, well-equipped space with a motivating, non-judgmental, and "exclusive feel" to it. Whether you are an athlete in a demanding sport like jiu-jitsu, or just looking to move better and live without chronic pain, The Lab is the answer Omaha has been missing, providing a team that will help you achieve fitness and agility goals further than you can imagine.

Specialized Services Offered
The Lab Training Systems offers an integrated approach to fitness and physical health, combining the best aspects of a personalized gym with the diagnostic and corrective expertise of a physical therapist. Their services are designed to be customized, not generalized.
The primary services and programs include:
- Personal Training: Dedicated one-on-one, 60-minute training sessions with expert guidance for individuals at every stage of their fitness journey, from novices to seasoned lifters.
- 1-on-1 Hybrid Coaching: Precise training and programming led by Cole Johnston, PT, DPT. This involves setting clear objectives, a personalized 4-week training block, and regular check-ins to continuously track progress and adjust the plan for goals such as tournament readiness, weight loss, sport durability (e.g., BJJ), and improved strength and power.
- Integrated Physical Therapy: Cutting-edge rehabilitation services provided by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy. This service is essential for addressing stubborn, constant pain (e.g., hip/back/shoulder pain) by immediately pinpointing the cause of the problem and recommending corrective strengthening and stabilization exercises. Specializations include orthopedics and concussion rehab.
- Open Gym Membership: Provides full access to a complete strength training playground equipped with all the necessary equipment for a great workout. This membership is available separately.
- Customized Training Regimens: The core promise is a workout or exercise regimen that is truly "tailored to their body," based on a professional assessment of what is needed to strengthen and stabilize specific areas for peak performance and injury prevention.
- Instruction and Insight: Coaches provide great instruction and insight regarding training for athletic performance, general fitness, and dietary goals.
- Group Training: Opportunities for team training, such as "Skywalker 101 Team Training," which fosters a collaborative training environment for those who thrive in a group setting.
Features and Highlights
The reviews from local users consistently point to several key attributes that make The Lab Training Systems a premier choice in the Nebraska fitness landscape.
- Training Led by a Certified PT, DPT: The single most valuable feature is the expertise of the owner, Cole, who is a Doctor of Physical Therapy. This allows for unparalleled precision in injury-aware training and rehabilitation, a service not typically found in a standard gym.
- Rapid and Lasting Pain Relief: Customers frequently report significant, immediate relief from chronic pain (e.g., hip and back issues) after starting The Lab’s tailored regimen, often succeeding where other costly interventions (chiropractic, acupuncture, massage) had failed.
- Motivating and Non-Judgmental Culture: The facility fosters a positive atmosphere where members feel comfortable and supported, allowing them to focus entirely on their progress without external pressure.
- High-Quality Equipment and Cleanliness: The gym is equipped with everything necessary for an effective strength and performance workout and is maintained to be "super clean."
- Ideal for High-Demand Sports: The Lab is a "secret weapon" for high-intensity athletes, as the trainers understand the specific demands of sports like jiu-jitsu and can program for durability, strength, and injury resilience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I cannot recommend The Lab Training Systems enough. I decided to embark on jiu-jitsu nearly into my fourth decade of life, and my body was struggling to handle such an intense sport. My right hip and back were in nearly constant pain for months, and I tried everything (and spent a lot of $$ in the process) to help - acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, other physical therapists, etc. Nothing was working and I thought I'd have to give up jiu-jitsu altogether and continue life in constant pain.I found Cole @ The Lab Training Systems through a post of the LOKAHI jiu-jitsu social media page. I figured if anyone would know what my body needed, it would be someone else who knows the sport and what it demands of the human body.In that initial consultation, Cole was able to immediately pinpoint the cause of the problem and recommend exercises to help strengthen and stabilize the area. After the first week, the pain was lower than it'd been in at least six months. A few more weeks of sessions and I was progressing enough to be let loose as long as I continued to follow the exercise regimen. I'm happy to report that nearly 6 months later, the area is still stabilized, even with continuing to do jiu-jitsu.I did, however, end up with a shoulder injury, but this time I knew who to call first - Cole. We are currently working through exercised to help strengthen this area now.Bottom line - anyone who is serious about having a workout or exercise or therapy regimen tailored to their body, call Cole @ The Lab. You won't be disappointed!
April 28 · Casey ClineIf you are looking for customized training, a solid team that will help you achieve your goals, look no further The Lab will deliver. Cole (owner) is awesome, he answers all questions, provides great instruction and insight when it comes to training for athletic performance, as well as any other fitness or dietary goals you are chasing. He is also a certified Physical Therapist. The Lab is equipped with all the equipment you need to get a great workout in. It is super clean and has access from 5am to 11pm everyday. The culture is motivating and non judgmental. It has a very exclusive feel to it. There is a speaker system available to rock out to your type of music and get a good pump. All in all, this gym is what Omaha has been missing. A place to get your gears turning and achieve all fitness and agility goals. And a great team that will take you further than you can imagine. Give this place a shot and you won’t regret it one bit.
April 27 · Andrew CamachoAs someone who trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s tough to find a physical therapist who truly gets what our bodies go through — but Cole does. He doesn’t just treat the injury; he digs into the root of the problem, builds a real plan around it, and focuses on making you stronger, more mobile, and ready to roll again. Whether it was a bum knee, a stubborn shoulder, or just moving better on the mats, my session with Cole felt like it was built specifically for me and my game. If you train and want someone who actually understands what you’re putting your body through, Cole’s the guy you want in your corner.
April 28 · Emmanuel MoraAwesome training facility with a knowledgeable and courteous staff. You can tell they really want everyone to improve and to be their best. Super clean locker rooms with showers and top-notch strength strength training equipment. I say this as a wrestling coach and MMA trainer of over a decade.
June 07 · Jason QuinleyI saw Cole for some back issues, that were non-jiu-jitsu related. He had me straightened out in no time. Super impressed with the gym nice clean and some of the best equipment you’ll see in Omaha.
