★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I've been working out at gyms for over 35 years and this is by far the best one I have been a member at. I joined over 5 years ago and have never regretted it. It is a great place to just workout, and stay away from the drama that can be prevalent at other gyms. They welcome all levels of fitness, from the experienced power lifter to the beginner looking for a great place to start their fitness journey. There is no piece of equipment they don't have. I especially enjoy the camaraderie Sport of Iron fosters between their loyal members. When you go to a smaller, locally owned gym like this, it feels like family. The fitness classes are great, with high energy and attention to detail. Matt, Xen and the whole staff make you feel welcomed and appreciated on a daily basis.
March 14 · Todd JordanI've been a member of Sport of Iron Fitness and a client of Matthew's for about two years now. For many years prior to joining I had been wanting to get into weight training, but my lack of knowledge and direction was keeping me from moving forward. After researching all of the gyms in the area, I finally decided to become a member and sign up for personal training sessions with Matthew, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.Matthew is a highly knowledgeable, personable and talented trainer who knows exactly how to structure a workout based on your individual needs and goals. He is very attentive and will make adjustments to your workout during the session based on how you're feeling that day. With me being a beginner, he made sure we focused on my form to help me learn the lifts properly and avoid injuries. I'm extremely happy with the progress I've made with my lifts and overall fitness over the years and always look forward to my next session. The gym staff and fellow members have all been warm and welcoming as well. I feel at ease walking into the gym knowing everyone there is friendly, and there is a sense of camaraderie knowing that everyone is focused on training and bettering themselves. If you ever need a spot, there is always someone nearby who is more than happy to help out.In terms of equipment, the gym has everything you need (and probably more). Lately I have been especially enjoying the new specialty squat bars and manual treadmills.I owe a lot to Matthew and Sport of Iron for helping me exceed my fitness goals and get into the best shape of my life. For anyone who is interested in strength training among a friendly encouraging community, this gym is exactly the place you are looking for.
March 21 · Kory MathisI am someone who likes to go to the gym in the morning before work. I enjoy the selection of equipment and the turf space for sleds. Before joining the gym I did some research and saw it was a power lifting gym. I am an average guy and by no means a body builder. That slightly intimidated me at first but everyone was very welcoming. So welcoming that I got my girlfriend to join. There is a community vibe that comes with a family owned business and I have never felt uncomfortable or intimidated no matter if i was going consistently for 6 months or my first day back after taking a few months off. My experience has been nothing but positive. The monthly membership with the open gym and unlimited classes is one of the better deals you will find in the area. I do not know of any place in the Hudson Valley where you can open the bay doors when it's nice out to get a lift in. It's a nice and unique touch when the weather is nice. Well worth checking out if you are considering joining a gym.
March 15 · Chris PenaI have been a member of every gym franchise under the planet and it wasn’t until I joined Sport of Iron that I started to achieve not only my fitness goals, but my personal goals as well. Matt, the owner, has created an inclusive environment for everyone to feel welcome no matter where they are starting on their wellness journey. As a 5’1 female with no weight lifting background, I was definitely intimidated joining this kind of weight lifting gym. Everyone here goes above and beyond to make you feel supported. I am grateful for Sport of Iron in helping me not only improve my physical health but my my mental health as well. Definitely check out a class with Xen for a great work out and good vibes.
March 13 · Angelina PollardI joined Sport of Iron two years ago and started working one-on-one with Matt immediately. Getting into strength training, specifically powerlifting, with Matt has completely changed my life — it's improved my relationship to myself and my own body, and it's widened my community. Matt has been so supportive of not only me personally, but also everyone I bring to the gym including everyone who comes to the Queer Barbell Club on Sunday mornings that I started a year ago. I feel so safe working with Matt and so at home at the gym. I *love* that it's a strength training gym. I love that it's a place where I feel comfortable and cheered on. I am very grateful! Highly recommend SOIF and working with Matt (and Xen!) for anyone interested in seeing what they're capable of in a very supportive atmosphere, especially anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community (join us on Sundays!).
