★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Machelle is truly one of the most spectacular teachers I have ever come across. I was fortunate enough to "stumble" upon Roots & River while visiting Brunswick last year, and now attend her online classes. She thoughtfully and expertly interweaves concepts from a variety of disciplines, including TCM, cycles of nature and poetry, to deepen each and every practice. The wisdom she shares is heartfelt and rooted in understanding cultivated over decades of practice and teaching. My only complaint is not living there, because I would practice in person every week! Thank you for being in the community and sharing an inclusive space for us all to grow.
April 06 · Mandy MoranWe travelled several hours to attend a workshop at this location, brand new for 2025. Although the decor was not yet complete, it was easy to tell that this is a first rate place to learn and practice. The studios are spacious and well equipped with high quality props. Owner Machelle was a wonderful welcoming hostess, and helped us to sort through options in dealing with some scheduling needs. Our teacher Tara, was extremely skilled and knowledgeable. The several restrooms were immaculate and beautifully appointed. Nearby parking was plentiful and free. It appeared there was much to explore nearby and we found excellent food and drink within walking distance. We look forward to returning again in a few months.
January 21 · Albert StormI love the Roots & River Yoga studio! I've taken a handful of yin and restorative yoga classes there and the teachers are phenomenal! They care deeply about their students and make sure everyone is engaged and getting what they need out of the class. I always feel more centered and less overwhelmed with life after leaving the studio.
January 11 · Amy ScottI have practiced Vinyasa and Yin Yoga with Machelle Lee for 20 years, at first in studio and later online when she moved to Brunswick because I can’t find anyone to replace what she does. Her practices are at once energizing, calming, and inspiring; they strengthen my body and uplift my spirit. I love the physical, mental, and spiritual engagement she encourages in us and how she follows the seasons according to traditional Chinese medicine. Beyond her deep knowledge of Yoga and her 30 years’ experience of teaching, what shines through is her caring and generous mind and heart. All who practice with her benefit from that.At 82, and in large part thanks to Machelle, I am still able to do most of the more challenging parts of her Vinyasa, but she also offers easier versions of the postures. During Yin she gives variations for the poses, depending on our preference and body type. She also reads to us from a wide variety of sources including the Radiance Sutras, Rumi, and Mary Oliver’s poems steeped in a profound love of nature. And even though I can connect only virtually, I feel the community she creates for all of us.
March 12 · Gabrielle RobinsonWonderful studio. Great classes and workshops. The owner, Machelle Lee, is a fabulous teacher with extensive knowledge and insights. She's been practicing yoga for almost 30 years and offers a safe and welcoming environment for people of all levels. If you want to learn about yoga, Chinese medicine, and healing, this is the place for you!
