Real Pilates - Upper East Side Introduce

In the bustling landscape of New York City's fitness scene, Real Pilates on the Upper East Side stands as a pillar of authentic, classical Pilates. Founded by physical therapist Alycea Ungaro, this studio is not just a place to work out; it is a center dedicated to the integrity of the Pilates method as it was originally intended. The environment is one of serious training, where the focus is on form, precision, and building a strong foundation from the inside out. Real Pilates distinguishes itself by offering a unique and deeply rooted approach to fitness that is both challenging and transformative. With a variety of sessions available on every piece of classical apparatus, the studio provides a comprehensive Pilates experience for all levels, from those just starting their journey to seasoned practitioners and even aspiring instructors. It’s a place where you can truly connect with your body and understand how to move with efficiency and grace. The studio's commitment to excellence is reflected in its knowledgeable instructors and its welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, making it a go-to destination for anyone in New York looking for a professional and effective Pilates practice.
While the studio's commitment to authenticity is a major draw, it is important to note that its serious approach may not align with everyone's expectations. Some members have found the classes to be more focused on controlled movement and stretching, which might feel less like an intense, calorie-burning workout. As one member shared, they found a mat class to be "more like a stretch" and not as challenging as they had hoped. This is a common characteristic of classical Pilates, which prioritizes core strength and mindful movement over high-intensity cardio. Additionally, the studio’s atmosphere can be busy and sometimes noisy due to the nature of concurrent private sessions, which may distract from the group class experience. A review mentioned the space was "super busy and noisy with several 1 on 1 sessions going on," making it difficult to hear the instructor. It is clear from these reviews that the experience can vary depending on individual expectations and the time of day. However, for those who value the authenticity of the Pilates method and a studio environment dedicated to precision and long-term results, these aspects are part of the training. Furthermore, the studio’s policies, particularly regarding specific populations, can be strict. One reviewer expressed an "extremely bad experience" after being told they could no longer take a group class during their pregnancy due to a "liability" issue. This highlights the studio's cautious and professional approach to client safety, which, while frustrating for some, is rooted in a commitment to responsible training.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I had an extremely bad experience at this studio. Despite taking a few classes there during my pregnancy, I was told one day I couldn’t take the class anymore since it’s a liability. The staff was not very kind about it and tried to get me to spend more money to have me do a private session. I’ve worked out at dozens of fitness studios during my pregnancy and never experienced anything like this.
June 14 · Julie PrizerThis was my first time here. I came in for a mat Pilates class. While the instructor was super nice, the class in itself was not challenging at all. It barely felt like I got a workout. It was more like a stretch. Also, the studio was super busy and noisy with several 1 on 1 sessions going on at the same time so we could barely hear our instructor and her cues. The whole set up was just weird.
May 29 · Jeena SharmaMelissa Jones is a classic Pilates instructor. She makes sure to understand any limitations a client has before beginning and works to make sure it is an excellent experience. Besides her great training abilities she is a lovely person to work out with. I would recommend her to anyone interested in a great classic Pilates workout.
September 16 · Stuart benickMelissa Miles is a Pilates whisperer! She is such a pro and always tailors the session to the individual and her aches or pain. Her sessions ar challenging, motivating and leave me feeling stretched out, stronger and at least 3 inches taller. I’ve seen the results, and she is incredibly motivating and kind and fun to train with. She is also so knowledgeable about Joe and the original Pilates form and practice. The studio is a joy with all the “real” Pilates equipment and philosophy. Melissa and this study will improve your posture, your mindset and your abs!
September 13 · Geralyn LucasThe most disappointing studio ! Called owner 3 times to tfind out about a problem that started at her studio. Never called back . How shocking that an owner would not want to be of help to a client. They are the most uncaring studio. Was with the studio from the time it opened till a few months ago. Ended up needing surgery because of an exercise I should not have been doing. They could not have cared less. Do not look for trouble! Look for another place that cares!!!!!!
