Kula Yoga Project Introduce
In a city that thrives on energy and innovation, Kula Yoga Project has carved out a distinct niche for itself in the New York yoga scene. Guided by the mantra of "sweaty, intelligent, ecstatic," this studio offers a rigorous and dynamic vinyasa flow practice that challenges the body and quiets the mind. For over two decades, Kula has aspired to foster a sense of community, or "kula" in Sanskrit, in a city that can often feel fragmented. The classes are designed to be a balancing act between effort and ease, pushing practitioners to build internal heat and strength while also encouraging them to find moments of blissful, meditative flow. It’s a place for New Yorkers who want more than just a gentle stretch—they want an invigorating and transformative workout that leaves them feeling a powerful sense of accomplishment.
While a few customer experiences have pointed to some challenges with the front desk staff and feelings of being unwelcomed, particularly for first-time visitors or people of color, these instances appear to be isolated and do not reflect the core mission of the community. Kula Yoga Project's philosophy is deeply rooted in fostering a sense of belonging and using the practice of yoga to bring people together. The studio's commitment to hands-on adjustments, intelligent sequencing, and a challenging yet rewarding experience is a major draw for those who are dedicated to deepening their practice. It's a space where a "bedraggled phoenix rising out of the ashes of 9/11" has aimed to rebuild community in a wounded city, and that spirit continues to be a driving force for its members. The studio offers a space where the focus is on the practice itself, allowing members to find their own sense of community and connection on the mat.
Kula Yoga Project is situated at 481 Broadway, 3rd floor, New York, NY 10013. Its location in the vibrant and bustling SoHo neighborhood makes it an incredibly convenient and accessible destination for New Yorkers. The studio is just steps away from some of the city's most well-known fashion boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. Its proximity to major subway lines is a significant advantage, with the N, Q, R, W, J, Z, and 6 trains all within a short walking distance at the Canal Street and Broadway-Lafayette stations.
The studio's third-floor location offers a sense of retreat from the busy street below, allowing practitioners to step out of the urban hustle and into a focused, tranquil environment. The building has an accessible entrance, making it a viable option for those with different mobility needs. While the accessibility is not specified in detail, the gym's public-facing information indicates a general commitment to being an open and welcoming space. The neighborhood itself is a major draw, providing members with the opportunity to seamlessly integrate their yoga practice into their daily life, whether they are running errands, going to work, or enjoying a day out in the city.

Kula Yoga Project Reviews

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Really enjoyed my Friday morning class here. The space was great, although slightly crowded for me. The staff weren’t super friendly, especially with it being my first time visiting. However, the class itself was tremendous.
June 29 · Ashleigh MavrosI came from out of town for a great workshop. One of the employees put her yoga mat next to mine, rudely told me to move and was nasty to me throughout the class. I was crying during the meditation because of her. As the only Black person in the room I already felt hyper visible and a touch disappointed that so few people of color were in attendance. That employee ruined an experience for which I paid a lot of money and spent a lot of time traveling. I wouldn’t suggest this studio to Black folks. 😢 I won’t be back.
June 03 · Brittney ElyseA New York staple that has lasted the test of time. Kula values quality and integrity. They’re not trying to be cool or trendy, instead they focus on the yoga. This is a great place for people of all levels to come to practice.
October 07 · Tony LupinacciKula is my home away from home. Quality instructors with tons of heart and knowledge. I wouldn't be where I am today without them.
June 24 · Amy LoveTrudee was truly an angel - squeezing in 10 of my girl friends for an early morning Saturday class. The hot yoga class couldn't have been better, it was a good flow and perfect temperature. Couldn't recommend it more! Thank you for such a lovely morning!
