YOGAqua Introduce
For residents and visitors in Southern California, where the ocean is an integral part of the lifestyle, YOGAqua offers a transcendent fitness experience unlike any other traditional yoga studio. Billed as LA's premier Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga studio, YOGAqua takes the popular practice of Vinyasa Yoga and moves it from the confines of a studio floor to the calming, restorative surface of the water. This fusion of yoga and paddleboarding is not just a physical fitness program; it is a holistic wellness activity that strengthens the body, sharpens the mind, and deepens the connection with nature.
YOGAqua's signature experience is a 90-minute class designed for all levels. The session begins with comprehensive instruction on how to properly use a paddleboard, followed by a peaceful paddle around the harbor to warm up and find a calm spot. The remaining hour is dedicated to practicing a Vinyasa Yoga flow directly on the anchored paddleboards. This unique setting naturally enhances the benefits of the practice, demanding greater focus, engaging the core and stabilizing muscles more intensely, and cultivating a profound sense of serenity as you float on the water.
Founded by Sarah Tiefenthaler, a seasoned yoga teacher and water enthusiast, YOGAqua was established in Marina Del Rey in 2011 and has since become a fixture in the Los Angeles wellness scene, appealing to everyone from first-time paddlers to advanced yogis looking for a new challenge.
YOGAqua capitalizes on the quintessential Southern California coastal environment, operating out of the tranquil waters of Marina Del Rey, one of the most picturesque locations in Los Angeles County. This outdoor setting, on Mother's Beach in the marina, provides a safe, serene, and uniquely Californian backdrop for the practice.
The studio’s location is:
13977 Palawan Way, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292, USA
Situated right by the water, the location is highly accessible for those coming from Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, and other Westside communities. The facility ensures convenience and inclusivity for all participants:
- Outdoor and Onsite Services: Classes are primarily held on the water, offering an open-air, nature-immersed experience.
- Wheelchair Accessible Amenities: The location features a wheelchair accessible parking lot and a wheelchair accessible restroom, demonstrating a commitment to welcoming individuals of all abilities.
- Amenities: Accessible restrooms are available for class participants.
- Payments: For ease of booking and payment, the studio accepts major Credit Cards and Debit Cards. Booking an appointment is required to secure your paddleboard for a session.
The core service at YOGAqua is the distinctive SUP Yoga class, but the studio also extends its offerings to private and professional development spheres, making it a comprehensive center for water-based yoga.
The services provided include:
- Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga Classes: The 90-minute signature session, which includes 30 minutes of paddle instruction and harbor paddling, followed by 60 minutes of Vinyasa Yoga flow on an anchored board.
- Vinyasa Yoga on Water: The primary style of yoga practiced, which is a dynamic sequence of postures synchronized with the breath, carefully customized for the paddleboard to enhance balance and core strength.
- Private Lessons: Offering personalized, one-on-one instruction for individuals or custom small-group bookings (e.g., corporate wellness, birthday parties, bachelorette parties), providing a tailored and memorable experience on the water.
- Teacher Trainings (YOGAqua SUP Yoga Instructor Certification Course): Professional 40-hour training courses that certify individuals to teach SUP Yoga. The comprehensive training covers water safety/rescue, SUP education, advanced paddle techniques, sequence building for the board, and WPA (World Paddle Association) Class 1 Certification, ideal for certified yoga teachers looking to expand their skills.
- Custom Events and Partnerships: Providing unique, on-site wellness experiences by bringing SUP Yoga to hotel pools or private properties, as noted in customer testimonials for unique vacation activities.
YOGAqua stands out in the crowded California fitness landscape due to its unique combination of challenge and tranquility, attracting a devoted community.
Key highlights and distinguishing features are:
- LA's Pioneer SUP Yoga Studio: As one of the first and most established SUP Yoga providers in the area, YOGAqua offers an unparalleled level of experience and professional instruction, including CPR certification as part of its teacher training.
- All-Levels Inclusivity: Despite the novelty of practicing yoga on a paddleboard, classes are genuinely accessible to all levels, including first-time paddleboarders and yoga beginners. Instructors are adept at guiding students with clear cues and setting encouraging expectations.
- Enhanced Fitness and Core Challenge: Practicing Vinyasa on a paddleboard naturally increases the intensity of the workout. The unstable surface forces greater engagement of core and stabilizing muscles, refining one's technique and strengthening new muscle groups compared to a mat-based practice.
- Stress Relief and Connection with Nature: The serene environment of the marina, with the sounds of the water and fresh ocean air, provides a calming effect that greatly contributes to stress reduction and overall mental well-being, enhancing the meditative aspect of the practice.
- Inclusive Community: YOGAqua fosters a welcoming and safe environment, proudly identifying as LGBTQ+ friendly and a Transgender safespace, ensuring all participants feel comfortable and supported in their practice.
- Highly Experienced Instructors: Instructors are not only certified in yoga but are also trained in water safety and are known for their great personalities and ability to adapt to all class sizes and skill levels, as highlighted in glowing customer reviews.

YOGAqua is worth choosing for the California local because it offers a perfect blend of the region's core attributes: a focus on health, a love for the ocean, and a search for unique experiences. In a state full of high-end yoga studios, YOGAqua provides the ultimate differentiator: the environment itself.
You are not just paying for a yoga class; you are investing in a 90-minute mini-retreat. The need for balance and focus on the water translates directly into real-life mental clarity and physical strength, surprising even seasoned practitioners with their own capabilities, as noted by a reviewer who successfully attempted wheel and a headstand. This practice removes the barriers of the traditional studio, connecting you directly to the elements—sunlight, air, and water—which is therapeutic and deeply relaxing, yet intensely challenging.
For those who feel their routine is stagnant, or who simply crave the healing power of the ocean, YOGAqua provides a fresh, exciting, and highly effective physical fitness program. The fact that the studio has a proven track record, offers comprehensive professional training, and maintains an inclusive and supportive atmosphere, led by instructors with genuine passion, solidifies its position as an exceptional and highly recommended choice in the Southern California wellness landscape. It is the ultimate opportunity to “go with the flow”—literally and figuratively—and discover a stronger, more centered version of yourself.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Karina led an awesome morning class at The Maybourne Hotel pool with fabulous views. Had a wonderful unique experience. Booked last minute when I saw it was offered as a fun thing to do for vacation and so glad I did. It was challenging but fun. Karina has a great personality and it's obvious to see she can adapt to any class size 1:1, small group or large and make the experience enjoyable for all levels, including beginners. Very impressed. I will definitely remember and would do it again in the future.
September 07 · Kristen BThis was my first time paddle boarding AND doing SUP Yoga! I was both nervous and excited getting out on the water. Sarah was great at giving instructions and setting expectations so when we started I felt more empowered than afraid. I was a little slower and cautious when paddling out around the marina, but Sarah made sure to keep an eye on me and directed me how to maneuver around 🙂 Once we started the yoga … wow! I love the water and love yoga so this was the best way to combine the two! It was incredibly calming and serene. Sarah’s cues were very clear and I had no trouble flowing through the poses. I even surprised myself with the courage I had to try wheel and a headstand … on a paddle board floating in the water! 😮 I don’t know what came over me, but I was confident and curious enough to give it a go! None of us fell in and we all had a great time! Highly recommend this- even if it’s your first time! I think you’ll surprise yourself in what you’re capable of! AND you’re in great hands with Sarah- she definitely cares and has a passion for this!
February 05 · Ashley DayWhile searching online for a yoga class to take during my brother's Bachelor party in Venice, I found YOGAqua and was drawn to it for the unique integration of yoga with the outdoors. I contacted Sarah for coordinating our group. She was informative, welcoming, and accommodating. Our skill levels varied, but everyone was able to follow along and we had a great time (even with a few of us falling overboard)! Her assistant, Leora, was also very friendly and even took pictures for us to capture our special event. If you're looking for a unique way to practice yoga and get outdoors, I'd recommend giving YOGAqua a try!
January 26 · Dr. Jordan HoffmanMy niece bought a paddle board Yoga class for the two of us as a birthday present for me. Sarah, our instructor, and the owner, is not only patient and knowledgeable, but sweet and funny too. She made us laugh and learn! Also taking great photos as she taught us. The most fun exercising ever!
June 14 · dana leonFirst time taking a SUP yoga class and it was so much fun! Took a class with Sarah and she made it look so easy, but it will definitely test your balance! During the 90 minute class, you'll spend the first 30 minutes paddling around the marina, then the remaining 60 minutes is the yoga. It was a cloudy day, but it was still a great workout and I felt very peaceful on the water. Definitely recommend taking a class with YOGAqua anytime you're in LA! :)
