The UMass Boston Beacon Fitness Center stands out for several key features and highlights, which are particularly valuable to its user base.
Extended Operating Hours: A major highlight for university staff and members is the "fantastic operating hours." This is especially beneficial for those with non-traditional schedules, allowing them the flexibility to work out early in the morning or late at night. The hours, typically from early morning to late evening on weekdays and shorter on weekends, make it convenient to fit exercise into a busy lifestyle.
Solid Equipment Diversity and Condition: Reviews praise the gym for its "good equipment diversity" and "good equipment condition." This indicates that the facility is well-maintained and provides a variety of options for different workout styles, which is crucial for a productive and engaging fitness experience.
Good Cleanliness in the Gym Itself: A specific highlight noted by a user is the "good cleanliness in the gym itself." While some parts of the facility, like the showers, may have some issues, the core workout area is maintained to a good standard, which is important for a comfortable and hygienic workout environment.
Inclusivity and Accessibility: The commitment to accessibility, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance, parking, and restroom, is a significant feature. It demonstrates that the gym is a welcoming place for everyone, which is an important consideration for a community-serving facility.
Affordable Option for Faculty and Staff: While the gym is free for students, a faculty member's review points out that even with a required membership fee, the pros of the facility "still outweigh the cons," making it a valuable and convenient resource for employees. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm university staff, and unlike students this gym is not free for me. I still prefer it over others because it has fantastic operating hours, good equipment diversity, good equipment condition, and good cleanliness in the gym itself. The cons however are that: the men's showers are not so clean, with over a year of what appears to be blue mop shreds all over the shower-stall floors that stick to your feet on the way in and out. And the temperature of the showers is not controllable, with the warmest still leaving you feeling cold, especially in colder months. And there is a limited amount of full length lockers, which is fine for warmer months but the moment you have a coat it becomes a pain. But despite all this, the pros still outweigh the cons, and to have this available as an employee is just gold.
