Proving Grounds Strength & Konditioning Introduce
Welcome to Proving Grounds Strength & Konditioning, a premier fitness destination for those in Detroit and the wider Michigan community who are serious about their training. Located in Detroit's vibrant landscape, this gym is a functional and no-frills space designed for people who are dedicated to strength, conditioning, and self-improvement. Unlike flashy, corporate gyms, Proving Grounds offers a refreshingly low-key and authentic environment where the focus is solely on the workout. It's a place where dedicated athletes, from powerlifters to functional fitness enthusiasts, can find everything they need to train with purpose and achieve their goals. The atmosphere is centered on a strong sense of community among members, who share a common commitment to continuous improvement.
The name "Proving Grounds" is a nod to its philosophy: it is a place where you test yourself and prove what you're capable of. The founder, Mike Axtell, created this gym out of a personal need for a place to train for competition, and that spirit of intense, goal-oriented training permeates the entire facility. Here, working out is replaced by "training," a distinction that emphasizes having a clear goal and putting in the hard work to achieve it. For residents in the Detroit area, this gym provides a powerful alternative to traditional fitness centers, offering a space where you can truly focus on building formidable physical and mental strength. The supportive community of like-minded members further enhances this experience, making you feel right at home as you pursue your next quest of self-improvement.
Proving Grounds is not about being flashy; it’s about being effective. The equipment is functional and well-suited for a variety of training styles. The gym is a hub for those interested in barbell work, including Olympic and powerlifting, as well as Metcon-style workouts. This versatility allows members to explore different types of training, keeping their routines fresh and challenging. The gym's low-key environment and chill members create a comfortable space where you can focus on your workout without feeling self-conscious. This inviting atmosphere, combined with the comprehensive equipment, makes Proving Grounds a go-to spot for serious fitness enthusiasts in Michigan.

The gym is also committed to accessibility, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot. These features ensure that the facility is welcoming and usable for all members of the Michigan community, regardless of mobility. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’ve been using this gym for a few months now. It has all the equipment you need for barbell (olympic and power) and Metcons. It's a functional space. The stationary equipment is dated but safe. The gym needs to be cleaned more often - it’s dusty and the floors need to be mopped/vacuumed.The information on the website is not accurate - the gym offers no classes at this point. There is a space to change clothes in the gym and a bathroom down the hallway.
December 30 · Erin TaborMike was kind enough to let us try out his gym while we're in town for the weekend. It was awesome! Tons of equipment and space to do whatever type of workout you prefer. The gym is low key and the members seem chill. Will definitely be coming back next time we're in town!
July 22 · Caitlin DenzingerSkip is very friendly and down to earth. He genuinely enjoys seeing people do better and improve. Im pretty sure he gets just as excited if not more than me when I hit a PR!!! Also everyone that works out at Proving Grounds grounds is very friendly and you never feel judged.
May 07 · Charles DillonIf you’re training for powerlifting, strongman, CrossFit or general strength, this is the place for you. Limitless equipment, great staff and true Detroit grit!
July 26 · Michael SmithA lot of awesome barbell/dumbbell equipment, some dated machines alongside some great ones.It is more like a bro’s local garage gym they let you use more than a full featured gym facility. While I liked it in the Fall time, it was just too cold for me in the Winter time. Not quite see your breath cold, but cold enough to feel uncomfortable all session and potentially catch a chill.I love that they offer a punch card option because to me, that is where this place shines. Can come in when needed to use amazing competition level gear but I am not sure I could recommend it as a year long facility.Other main issue is the automation behind entry/exit and cancellation is a bit janky and it’s not super easy to wrangle with it when anytime I’ve called or I’ve seen someone call, they don’t get answer or text back.Communication, customer service and the location itself could use some improvement.Overall, solid 8/10. One of the only things like it in Metro Detroit. I am just disappointed overall that for intermediate lifters, there does not seem to be a gym yet that strikes all the boxes for a year long facility.
