What is Worth Choosing
For a California resident seeking a martial arts gym, **Black House MMA** is an exceptional choice due to the unparalleled quality of instruction and the fantastic community. It is particularly worth choosing for those who are serious about learning effective combat skills—whether for self-defense, physical conditioning, or competition. The gym's dedication to foundational techniques and the caliber of its coaches, many of whom are black belts and professional competitors, elevates the training experience far above that of a general fitness center.
A notable and highly recommended feature is the **Kids Jiu Jitsu program**, which receives outstanding reviews for the patience and kindness of its instructors, making it a valuable investment in a child’s development of discipline and confidence. For adults, the ability to cross-train in **BJJ (Gi and No Gi)**, **Muay Thai**, and **Wrestling** under one roof is a major draw.
However, based on factual customer feedback, prospective members must proceed with caution regarding the membership and payment process. The reported instance of an unexpected large charge and an associated refund fee serves as a vital warning. While the actual training experience and the people on the mats are highly recommended, the need for transparency on billing is a critical point. Therefore, new members are strongly advised to take the precautionary steps of **getting all membership, cancellation, and fee terms in writing** and considering the use of a separate payment method for dues to ensure a completely stress-free experience from start to finish.

June 18 · Andreza cantoI wanted to share my experience at this gym, which has been a bit of a rollercoaster. For six months, I was a happy member. The place isn't huge, but it's clean and well-kept. What really made it special were the people – the coaches are fantastic and the community is so welcoming. I looked forward to my workouts and felt like I was making real progress. When I first joined, I knew I'd be moving away in about half a year. I made sure to tell the staff member who signed me up that I didn't want any recurring charges after I left. They assured me it wouldn't be a problem, so I went ahead and gave them my card details. In hindsight, I wish I'd been more cautious about that.As my time at the gym was coming to an end, I didn't leave anything to chance. About a month before my membership was set to expire, I went in and reminded them that I would be moving and wouldn't be continuing my membership. I wanted to make absolutely sure there wouldn't be any issues. They acknowledged this, and I left feeling confident that everything was sorted.Fast forward to after I moved. Imagine my shock when I saw a $1,000 charge from the gym on my statement -- I couldn't believe it. I reached out to them right away, expecting them to realize their mistake and sort it out. Instead, they told me there was a $199 fee from their billing system in order to refund the charge. This was the first I'd heard of any fee, not to mention that they just charged me $1,000 for the next 6 months service that I won't be able to use. It just doesn't add up.Now, I'm in the middle of disputing this charge, and it's been a headache, to say the least. It's such a shame because my time actually going to the gym was great. The coaches had nothing to do with this billing mess, and they deserve recognition for their hard work.I wanted to share this story as a heads-up to anyone thinking of joining. The workout experience is solid, but be very, very careful with your payment information. If you do decide to join, maybe use a separate card just for the gym, and get everything in writing. It's sad that I have to give this warning, but I'd hate for someone else to end up in the same boat.To wrap it up, I'm torn. Part of me wants to wholeheartedly recommend this place for the great workouts and people. But this payment issue has left a really bad taste in my mouth. Just be careful, folks, and make sure you're crystal clear on all the terms before you sign up.
September 06 · Sungmin JinI'm not sure if I was simply unlucky, but I recently had a rather unusual interaction with the staff at your facility. Our 11-year-old son participated in a trial jiu-jitsu practice, and afterward, he was quite upset. According to him, another student repeatedly punched him in the throat while sitting on top of him. We didn't immediately discuss this with the staff, as he only mentioned it once he came home.We had originally planned to return and enroll him for a longer period, but before doing so, I wanted to inform the staff about the incident and gain their perspective. Additionally, I was curious about the possibility of canceling the membership and receiving a refund for the remaining fees if such incidents persisted. The staff's response was defensive, asserting that such incidents do not occur at the gym. They suggested that it might be considered normal in this type of setting, insinuating that perhaps we were not accustomed to it. However, the situation is that our son has been practicing jiu-jitsu for over a year at a different gym, and I myself have over a decade of experience in martial arts.Ultimately, the conversation ended with the gym informing us that we were not welcome as members and suggesting that we find a different gym due to our poor initial experience. This wasn't at all the outcome I was looking for; I simply wanted reassurance that the safety of the students was a priority. On a more positive note, I did observe that the practice sessions appeared to be well-focused on physical conditioning and technique. It's possible that my encounter occurred on an off day for the staff.
September 11 · Martin OesterbergAwesome gym! The coaches and staff are inviting, patient, and helpful. The environment is very familial and clean. There is a nice blend of experienced and beginner practitioners that make it very easy to learn.
January 24 · Justin MedellinI have trained at most schools in the South Bay. This is by far the top school as far as culture and techniques go. If you want to reach your goals fast, come try a class at Black house redondo beach.
