The philosophy at Active Pilates is rooted in the belief that movement is medicine, and that a deep understanding of the body's mechanics is the key to lasting wellness. The studio combines the principles of traditional Pilates with other advanced modalities, such as GYROTONIC® exercise, to create a truly comprehensive approach to body conditioning. The owner, Mike, is renowned for his perceptive and precise ability to identify the root cause of physical issues, even when other medical professionals may have missed them. His methods are not just about building muscle but about restoring functional movement and correct alignment, which is crucial for alleviating chronic pain and preventing future injuries. The atmosphere is one of focused support, where challenging workouts are balanced with lively, engaging conversation. The studio’s approach is highly personalized, focusing on one-on-one and small group sessions to ensure every client receives the attention they require. The services go beyond standard workouts to address specific physical challenges and goals.
- Private Sessions: These one-on-one sessions are the cornerstone of the studio’s offerings, allowing for highly customized workouts. As reviews confirm, the instructor can immediately pinpoint problems and create exercises that provide a challenging workout without aggravating pain points.
- Semi-Private Sessions: For those who prefer to work out with a partner or a friend, semi-private sessions are available for two people. This option provides a more intimate setting than a large group class while still offering personalized guidance.
- Group Reformer and Gyrotonic Classes: The studio offers both group Reformer Pilates and group Gyrotonic classes. These sessions provide a high-energy, fast-paced program while still catering to the specific needs and fitness levels of the clients, making them both challenging and safe.
- Chronic Pain and Injury Rehabilitation: A key specialty of Active Pilates is working with clients who have chronic pain or past injuries. The instructor has a deep understanding of musculoskeletal issues and can create targeted exercises for pain relief, as evidenced by a client who found relief from chronic ankle pain after just one session.
- Senior Fitness: The studio is an excellent resource for senior citizens seeking to improve their balance, strength, and overall mobility, helping them feel "more steady on their feet."
- Conditioning and Body Tuning: For healthy individuals or athletes, the sessions are designed to take their conditioning to the next level, combining Pilates and GYROTONIC® exercise to enhance strength and balance for sports or general fitness.
What truly distinguishes Active Pilates from other fitness centers is its unique set of features and the deep expertise of its instructor. These highlights are what contribute to the studio’s reputation for providing life-changing results for its clients.
- Highly Perceptive and Skilled Instructor: The owner, Mike, is lauded by clients for his incredible ability to diagnose physical issues just by observing movement. This diagnostic skill, which clients say has helped them where doctors could not, allows for incredibly effective, targeted workouts.
- Integration of Pilates and GYROTONIC®: Active Pilates is one of the few studios in the Bay Area to offer both Pilates and GYROTONIC® exercise. The GYROTONIC® method, with its spiraling and circular movements, is particularly beneficial for decompressing the spine and joints, providing a unique and holistic approach to wellness.
- Results-Oriented Approach: The focus is squarely on getting results. Clients report tangible, life-improving benefits, from being "pain-free" after a single session to feeling "stronger and longer" after a year of consistent work.
- Personalized and Entertaining Environment: The studio maintains an environment that is both professional and friendly. The instructor’s "funny sense of humor" and "lively conversation" make workouts feel less like a chore and more like a rewarding and enjoyable part of the day.
- Accessibility and Amenities: The studio is thoughtfully equipped with a wheelchair accessible entrance and restroom, demonstrating a commitment to serving a wide range of clients. Clean restrooms are also available for convenience.

chronic pain
★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I went to Mike for chronic pain due to a fussed ankle. The pain had been intermittent over the years. However, recently it had become consistent and interfered with my quality of life. I saw several doctors and none could see a physical reason for the pain. When I walked into Mike’s studio, he immediately saw the problem. In one session he rendered me pain free! It has now been three days and I am able to take long walks with my wife. Before I saw Mike I couldn’t go half a block without pain. Also I’m walking more balanced. Now, as a senior citizen, l feel more steady on my feet.
March 27 · Marco SchatzmanMike is the BEST! I’ve been working with him for about a year now and he’s helped me so much with my chronic pain. He customized exercises that don’t aggravate my pain points but still provide me with a challenging workout. I feel stronger and longer than when I first started seeing him. He also has a funny sense of humor and is very entertaining with his lively conversation. If you haven’t seen Mike yet give him a try. He’s worth it!
January 15 · Kate MedinaI am guilty of not being consistent with any type of workout until Active Pilates — I love the reformer group classes with Mike! He is funny, keeps you motivated, and gives you a good workout. Mike has created a non-intimidating space and has a consistent group of great people who take his classes. I’ve been going here almost 2 years strong — this is a true testament to Mike!
April 11 · Catherine BaeMike is the best!! I have worked with him on and off for the past few months to get back into shape after having two kids. Wow has he surpassed all of my expectations. He has a true gift for looking at how you walk/move and figuring out where the problem areas are. He understands how all parts of the body work together and can pin point the muscles you need to strengthen and what you need to stretch. It's been part PT, part personal training. Can't recommend him highly enough!
January 13 · Molly Siems CavanaughMike is super knowledgeable and has really unique and effective ways of diagnosing and treating injuries and chronic pain. He offers pilates, TRX, traditional weight training and more. Something for everyone. Check him out!
