University District Yoga Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For residents across the greater Washington state looking for a yoga practice that emphasizes meticulous detail, precise alignment, and genuine intellectual depth, University District Yoga in Seattle offers a distinguished and highly specialized experience. This women-owned studio is not simply a place to 'go through the motions' of a workout; it is a dedicated center for learning and growth, built around the profound tradition of Iyengar Yoga.
Located in the heart of the University District, this studio, led by experienced educators like Tara B., provides a welcoming yet rigorous environment for practitioners of all levels. Iyengar Yoga, the core methodology taught here, is known globally for its emphasis on alignment, sequencing, and the thoughtful use of props to make poses accessible to every body. Students are consistently taught not just how to perform a pose, but why and how the body should move to achieve optimal safety and benefit. As one dedicated customer notes, "If you want a class that goes through the motions, this is not it. If you want a class where you actually learn about the poses and grow in your practice, this is it."
University District Yoga distinguishes itself by blending the physical practice (asanas) with the intellectual and philosophical aspects of yoga. The classes are described as "methodical and well choreographed," designed with a progressive sequence where each pose purposefully builds upon the previous one for deeper opening, sustained connection of mind to body, and genuine physical growth. The studio’s commitment extends to offering therapeutic yoga services, addressing specific body healing needs, and ensuring that the ancient art and science of yoga are shared with clarity, patience, and professional expertise. This studio is a highly respected cornerstone of the Seattle yoga community, offering a path for profound and lasting personal transformation.

August 25 · Lois PierrisIf you want a class that goes through the motions, this is not it. If you want a class where you actually learn about the poses and grow in your practice, this is it. Tara's classes are methodical and well choreographed, with each pose building upon the previous for deeper opening and growth. Tara's teaching style is straight forward--she demonstrates each pose step by step and explains in detail. She then watches us as we practice and repeat, assisting and recommending alternate poses as needed. I appreciate the slowness of her class as it gives me time to feel my body open and receive and to connect my mind to my body and breath.
May 29 · Manjit KaurHighly recommended! I have attended the weekly Zoom class for a couple years now - Tara is very knowledgeable and a steady, inspiring teacher. She uses props and alternate poses to individualize instruction, allowing for physical/body differences. The in-person workshops are engaging & enjoyable. I feel lucky to have found University District Yoga when I was a total yoga newbie!
March 23 · Gail AmoleI am grateful to learn from such an inspiring, dedicated and knowledgeable teacher , Tara. Tara’s care for detail and encouragement to improve one step at a time makes me motivated to deepen my practice with understanding without succumbing to my expectations of nailing it quickly.Thank you Tara for the knowledge, practice and excellence you bring through your teaching for Iyengar Yoga.
May 28 · Aarti TiwariI have taken gentle yoga classes from Tara Bernstein for several years. She has a dedicated following because of her care and attention to her client's individual limitations and needs. But that doesn't mean she doesn't challenge us! When a class is over, parts of my body that were sore feel much better. Tara has successfully transitioned her class to on-line and I am grateful to still enjoy weekly yoga.
