The People's Yoga Introduce
For those living in Portland, Oregon, who are seeking a yoga studio that feels like more than just a place to work out, The People's Yoga offers a deeply rooted and community-focused experience. This studio is built on the philosophy that yoga should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or physical ability. It’s a space where you can find not only a great physical practice but also a community that is friendly, inclusive, and committed to the deeper teachings of yoga. This article will provide a detailed look at what makes The People's Yoga a beloved institution in the local community, from its diverse class offerings to its commitment to creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all.
The core philosophy of The People's Yoga is centered on accessibility and inclusivity. They strive to provide classes, workshops, and trainings that are available to all, regardless of economic barriers. The studio aims to foster a diverse, non-dogmatic, warm, and encouraging environment that is free of competition and expectations. This commitment to a supportive atmosphere is a major draw for many, as it removes the intimidation that can sometimes be associated with yoga studios. One happy client noted that "The space is open and everyone I met was friendly and inclusive. Highly recommended!" This sentiment is a testament to the studio's success in building a true community. The teachers are also highly praised for their ability to guide students through their practice in a way that is both fun and deeply educational. One reviewer was thrilled to learn a headstand, something they didn't think was possible, highlighting the skilled and encouraging nature of the instructors.
Beyond the physical practice, The People's Yoga distinguishes itself by incorporating the philosophical and spiritual aspects of yoga into its classes. As one review highlighted, it's a place where you can find "teachings of mantras and yoga philosophy," which can be hard to find at other studios. This emphasis on the holistic nature of yoga provides a richer, more meaningful experience for practitioners who are looking to deepen their understanding of the practice. The studio’s commitment to accessibility is also evident in its pricing structure, which is designed to be affordable. They offer a variety of options, including memberships and drop-in rates, with some funds from memberships going directly to support community members in need. This is a significant feature that aligns with the studio's mission to make yoga accessible to every person, a value that resonates strongly with the Portland community.
While the studio is highly regarded, some feedback from customers provides a balanced perspective for those considering joining. One review expressed a wish for more early morning classes, noting that the 7:30 am to 8:30 am class time can be a struggle for working individuals trying to get to work across town by 9:00 am. This suggests that while the evening and midday schedules are plentiful, the early bird practitioners might find the options a bit limited. This is a common challenge for many studios, but it's worth noting for those with a tight morning routine. Despite this, the studio's wide range of evening options and virtual classes helps to provide flexibility for a diverse range of schedules. The overall sentiment remains overwhelmingly positive, with members loving the studio and its teachers, showcasing its strong position within the Portland yoga scene.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Absolutely love the People's studios and teachers. I have learned a ton from the teachers here (including headstand which I didn't know was possible) and it was all so fun. Also love that some classes offer teachings of mantras and yoga philosophy since this can be hard to find at other studios. The space is open and everyone I met was friendly and inclusive. Highly recommended!
September 16 · Brittany TurnerI love this studio and the teachers! I only wish they held early morning classes. The 7:30-8:30 classes are great but trying to get home, showered, and across town for work at 9 can be a real struggle for working folks. They have lots of evening options but there is nothing like a morning class to start your day off right.
August 20 · Lucille Ausman2024: Holy Snake with Veronika - 1 star"don't drink water." "don't go into child's pose." "you don't need blocks; go deeper." "get into the position even if you're not doing it right." "my yoga teacher would pull the mat right out from under you if you wouldn't move." "someone in here is doing it wrong." this instructor is militant and aims to shame. you should have a lot of confidence before trying this class so you don't hurt yourself. class ended a half hour late with no notice.2023: Loved the restorative yoga class I attended. Instructor helped students with prop placement and read a poem at the end of the practice. Lots of blankets, blocks, etc to borrow on site.
June 02 · Jamie JeffersonNice, large neighborhood studio, and I loved the beautiful plants throughout. The weekend class I attended was packed. I will say I was surprised at the poor quality of the loaner mats (which cost an additional $2). Beginners, travelers, and people without much money are more likely to need a loaner mat, and offering them a slippery, worn-out mat that wasn't designed for yoga isn't very inclusive :(
January 25 · MDo not recommend. They don't stand behind their online registration platform. I registered for two of us, which their platform let me do, and paid for two registration fees. When we showed up to class, they were full and said, "Our system doesn't work that way." Ah, so they know it but don't have any system in place to take care of customers who use the process in place. They could even see on my registration that I had paid before the class was closed. Too bad. They don't care. They obviously don't need new clients with all these 5-star reviews, and I don't need to take yoga in a toxic environment like that.
