South City YMCA Introduce
When Missouri residents look for a place to focus on health, fitness, and family well-being, the search often leads to an organization deeply rooted in the community: the YMCA. For those in the St. Louis area, the
South City YMCA
stands out as a prime example of a comprehensive fitness and community center, offering much more than just a typical gym experience. This non-profit organization is dedicated to building a healthy spirit, mind, and body for everyone in the community, reflecting a commitment that goes beyond the workout floor. The South City YMCA is recognized not just as a gym, but as a crucial youth organization and a facility featuring a dedicated indoor swimming pool. This multi-faceted approach means that whether you are an adult seeking personal training, a family looking for engaging youth activities, or a senior aiming for active living, this St. Louis institution has a program or amenity designed to meet your needs. It's a place where membership opens the door to a wide range of services, aiming to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all St. Louisans.
The friendly and inclusive atmosphere is frequently noted by local users, and the commitment to a clean facility and supportive staff creates a welcoming experience. However, prospective members should be aware that, like any major facility, there can be varying conditions, such as the functionality of some equipment monitors, so bringing personal entertainment for cardio workouts is a tip straight from the community. Additionally, those specifically focused on heavy free-weight lifting should visit to see if the available selection meets their specific needs, as some dedicated lifters have felt the weight area is more limited. Yet, for the vast majority—especially families, cardio enthusiasts, class-goers, and swimmers—the offerings are extensive and high-quality.
The South City YMCA is strategically located in the heart of St. Louis, MO, making it a convenient and accessible option for residents across the South City neighborhood and surrounding areas.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The South City YMCA is a nice facility. The staff is friendly and the facility is clean. There are many machines for working out. They have both weight machines and free weights. There are about three studios for group exercise, or spinning. They offer a wide variety of courses, and you have to sign up on your app. You cannot sign up for an entire series; but each individual session. until 24 hours in advance, so it doesn’t allow to plan ahead for long-term. It has a gym with one main basketball court and the running track requires 19 laps to complete a full mile. It has a swimming pool with a few lanes and an area for wading or walking or water aerobics. I do appreciate they provide a variety of locker options, including ones where you customize the combination, so you don’t need to bring a lock. There is a sauna and a steam room.I’d give it a five if it had more basketball courts, a larger walking track also more monitors you can see or hear. Most of the monitors on the machines don’t work, so bring your own entertainment.
March 26 · Greg RohdeI'll give it 2 stars because there was definitely a lot of people up there that looked like they were having fun. They have a nice indoor pool with a water slide that looked fun and a nice amount of cardio equipment in the gym. I went up there to lift weights though and I was super disappointed. They have one dust covered weight bench with a few small free weights but it is a complete dud for lifting. The dude behind the counter was the worst experience tho. He was less than unhelpful and easily can be called rude, short, and completely unhelpful. I was disappointed with the equipment but was still planning on signing up me and the kids so I had some questions about what a membership includes and he didn't answer one single question I had satisfactory. I ended up walking out without signing up for anything and I'll never go back. Not to this specific one at least. Maybe the YMCA has some worthwhile things worth joining but I wouldn't know considering the abysmal service or lack there of that I received. For a soccer moms with kids it might be beneficial but for the bros or chicks who want to lift don't waste your time and gas going here you won't find anything but disappointment, frustration, and probably a little anger. 💪🏻💪🏿💪🏽💯Good luck
August 06 · Tim GowerOnce again the lifeguard “slept in” so everyone who wanted to swim this morning was turned away. Pool is never operating as it says on the schedule. Consistently watch ymca staff kick people out of swimming lanes at incorrect times. Make sure to lock up your valuables because there will be dozens of unsupervised children running around the locker room after they leave the schools nearby. Don’t expect any help from the front desk staff except in the early morning. The evening staff are typically rude and lazy so just avoid if possible
September 21 · Patrick MoynihanMorning staff and pool staff are great! Shout out to Chip, Sandra and Anton! The walking track is horrible for the body...hard cement. The gym on Sunday reeks of weed. The dudes own it with their music and cussing. After school teens are unsupervised. I witnessed one kid get bullied to the ground in tears. I addressed gym issues with staff who dismissed it and said they can't do anything about it. Overall could be cleaner and machines are broken for a long period of time. I enjoy the pool but it's annoying when I get bumped for swim lessons. I was told they take priority. I've asked when lessons take place so I can coordinate my schedule but nobody seems to know. Please offer more water aerobics for a younger crowd.
May 07 · Shannon Marie5-starOne decrement could be Indoor basketball court size/walking zone. The other is no hot tub. The rest of the facility is top notch.I agree with other reviewers about friendliness of staff. Very pleasant. Kudos. This shows outstanding management.I find YMCA pools somewhat warm. This one was warm but not excessively hard to workout in (better). Nice water quality. Kudos again. Sauna but no hot tub.[Photo note: books present in front area part of a book drive--I added a couple]
