Its central location makes it easily reachable for residents from various parts of the city. As a public park facility, accessibility is a key priority. The gym is equipped with a wheelchair accessible entrance, a wheelchair accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair accessible restroom, ensuring that individuals with mobility challenges can comfortably and safely use the facilities. This commitment to inclusivity is a significant advantage, making fitness and recreation more attainable for a broader segment of the community. The gym’s location within the larger José Martí Park also means it benefits from a beautiful setting along the Miami River, providing a pleasant environment for both indoor and outdoor activities. Free parking is available, which is a major convenience in a busy urban area like Miami, eliminating a common barrier to visiting. The gym and park are open for extended hours, providing flexibility for people with different schedules to fit in a workout or recreational activity, which is a key advantage of a publicly-run facility.
The José Martí Gym offers a variety of services that cater to a diverse clientele, from individuals looking for a traditional workout to those who prefer group sports and aquatic activities. The main services and amenities available include:
- Indoor Gym: The facility includes an indoor gym with fitness equipment, allowing for a standard workout routine. While it may not have the vast array of equipment found in a large commercial gym, it is a functional and effective space for strength training and conditioning.
- Basketball Court: A key feature of the facility is its indoor basketball court. This is a significant draw for local basketball enthusiasts, offering a well-maintained space for games and practice. The court is also used for other sports, such as Pickleball, expanding its utility for the community.
- Swimming Pool: The gym complex includes a swimming pool, which is a major benefit in Florida’s warm climate. The pool is used for various activities, including lap swimming, open swim sessions, and water aerobics classes.
- Community Programs: As a public facility, José Martí Gym often hosts a variety of community-based activities. These can include after-school programs, summer camps for children and teens, and free fitness classes like yoga. These programs add significant value by providing structured and supervised activities for different age groups.
While the scheduling for some of these activities, particularly for teens, has been noted as inconsistent in some reviews, the existence of these programs is a testament to the facility's mission. The staff's role in managing these activities is crucial, and the facility aims to provide opportunities for youth and adults to stay active and engaged. The availability of multiple sports courts and a swimming pool in a single location makes it a versatile destination for a family or an individual with varied fitness interests.
In addition to its core services, José Martí Gym is distinguished by several key features and highlights that enhance its value as a community hub. These are elements that set it apart from a typical private fitness center. Some of the most notable features include:
- Affordability: As a public facility, José Martí Gym is either free or offers very low-cost daily fees or monthly memberships. This makes it an incredibly affordable option for residents on a budget, providing access to essential fitness and recreational amenities without the high cost of a private gym.
- Wheelchair Accessibility: The gym's commitment to accessibility is a major highlight, with a wheelchair accessible entrance, parking lot, and restroom. This ensures that the facility is inclusive and welcoming to individuals of all abilities, a key feature that underscores its public-service mission.
- Diverse Amenities: The combination of a gym, indoor basketball court, and swimming pool in one location is a significant highlight. This allows for a variety of workouts and recreational activities, catering to different interests and making it a great place for a full day of activity.
- Community Focus: The gym's role as a community center is a key feature. It provides a space for organized sports, youth programs, and community events, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging social interaction. The beautiful indoor basketball and Pickleball court is noted as a highlight, drawing in players who enjoy a well-maintained space.
- Debit Card Payments: The acceptance of debit cards provides a convenient and secure payment option for patrons, streamlining the process of paying for services.
These features collectively highlight the gym's commitment to being a versatile, affordable, and inclusive space for the Miami community. While some reviews mention challenges with staff and management, the core value of the facility remains in its accessible amenities and its role in providing essential recreational services to the public. It is a place that offers something for everyone, from an intense basketball game to a refreshing swim.

The well-maintained basketball court, in particular, has received positive feedback from users who appreciate a good place to play. For anyone in the Miami area looking for an affordable, convenient, and diverse place to stay active, José Martí Gym is a worthwhile choice. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The inside gym might be decent in terms of the facility itself, but the way it’s managed is completely unacceptable. The biggest problem is that the schedule changes constantly — every time we show up, the time has been switched again with no notice or explanation. It’s frustrating and unfair, especially for teens who never get a real chance to play, participate, or even just feel welcome. They’re constantly overlooked, and it’s clear there’s a serious lack of respect for kids and their time. On top of that, the staff are often rude, dismissive, and unhelpful. Instead of creating a supportive environment, they treat kids like they’re a burden. The people running this place can’t seem to make up their minds, and the inconsistent scheduling and poor attitude from the staff send a clear message: children and teens aren’t a priority here. That needs to change — fast.
June 09 · Bryant YwGreat staff, good organization, beautiful indoor basketball and Pickleball court. In the heart of Miami come visit and enjoy the fun.
June 27 · Phil del CuetoThe workout area of the gym has seen better days. The equipment doesn't function too well. Staff don't seem to work to keep up putting the weights away, clean the benches and equipment. It's too bad. A few years ago, it was in better condition. And unfortunately, other neighborhood gyms run by Miami Dade are much better than this one. Take a tour before paying for membership (which, even with rundown equipment is inexpensive).
November 16 · EricPickelball courts plus all the usual Gym facilities.Big, clean, beautiful and helpful stuff.
January 13 · Moshe WolbergerSo I've lived here for years since 2008. The gym membership used to be 100 dollars and at that time it was more accessible. They rent the gym out to other communities for example police officers nurses and there is no access. The issue with that is they should be offering less memberships. It has always been 3 dollars to go into the gym. However it is now 150 to buy membership and you can not go to the gym you paid for. I feel robbed, I've been to the gym 15 times and probably had access 5. I definitely should just pay my 3 dollars. Like the gym stays at 3 dollars but the membership went up make it make sense
