Intramural Sports Building Introduce
For generations of students, faculty, and staff at the University of Michigan and residents of Ann Arbor, the Intramural Sports Building (IMSB) has been a cornerstone of campus life. More than just a gym, it is a historic sports complex that serves as a central hub for athletic activity, friendly competition, and community building. While it may have a storied history and some of its equipment might show its age, its recent renovations have modernized key spaces, ensuring it remains a vital resource for health and wellness. The IMSB offers a unique environment where the passion for sport and fitness is palpable, making it a great destination for anyone looking to get active in the heart of Ann Arbor.
The philosophy of the IMSB is deeply rooted in the concept of accessible recreation. It’s a place where a thousand people can congregate daily to mix their exercise with sociability. The atmosphere is often described as lively and spirited, especially on the courts. A key highlight for many is the "great place for pickup basketball and other IM sports." The beautiful, full-sized courts are a major draw, and the competitive, yet friendly, nature of the games is a big reason why people keep coming back. Even students who live on other parts of campus make their way to the IMSB "quite often," a testament to its magnetic pull.
Customer reviews offer a balanced view of the facility. The renovation is widely praised as "beautiful," and the staff are consistently described as "very nice," which contributes to a positive overall experience. However, some reviews point out that the building can be short on space, and some equipment is outdated or under repair. This is an important detail for those who are primarily focused on modern weight and cardio equipment. Despite these limitations, the gym's strengths in other areas, particularly its fantastic court facilities and the vibrant sports community, often outweigh these concerns for its target audience.
The Intramural Sports Building is located at 606 E Hoover Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Its central location on campus, near prominent landmarks, makes it a convenient spot for students, faculty, and other members. The facility is well-equipped for accessibility, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. While the primary parking option is free street parking, which can be limited at times, its walkability and central location make it easy to reach from various parts of campus and the surrounding neighborhoods. This prime spot in Ann Arbor ensures that it is a go-to destination for anyone looking for sports and fitness opportunities.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Overall solid gym. The problem is it’s short on space. The staff do their best to fit equipment in the most efficient way possible but they’re fighting a losing battle. Lots of the equipment is outdated and “under repair”. It’s a great place for pickup basketball and other IM sports but compared to newer collegiate gyms it leaves a lot to be desired.
March 14 · Matt RollerRenovation is beautiful. Staff are always very nice.If you're looking for some good pickup basketball competition on campus, this is the place. Four beautiful basketball courts make it so you'll never have to wait long to get in some action. Training room is also very nice with everything you need for a good workout.I would definitely recommend going here to keep in shape. I lived in Alice Lloyd on the hill but still found my way to the IM building quite often.
October 10 · Theo ShapinskyReally cool facility with good amenities. No longer offer multi visit passes which is a bummer. Non alumni pay $20 a visit.
July 13 · Christina RoverThe Intramural Sports Building is a really nice facility with top of the line equipment and great fitness classes. The gym is very clean and everyone is respectful. The basketball courts are in great condition. The summer is generally the best time to use the facility because most of the students are away. The start of each semester brings a massive surge of people and makes it difficult to get in a decent workout without battling for equipment - even the fitness classes get overcrowded.
September 22 · Mark CoughlinWas here with my daughter whom played in the FAAST Basketball Tournament. The facilities were great for them to host the games there. 4 full length courts and plenty of space.
