Industrial Strength Gym: Fitness & Jiu Jitsu Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Oregonians—especially those in the Portland area—looking to integrate authentic strength training, skill development, and martial arts into their routine, Industrial Strength Gym: Fitness & Jiu Jitsu offers a unique and highly recommended solution. Located in the welcoming St. Johns neighborhood, this facility is far from a big-box gym; it is a dedicated, community-focused training center specializing in two powerful disciplines: expertly coached strength and conditioning, and world-class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).
Industrial Strength Gym (ISG) prides itself on catering to individuals who may have felt intimidated by traditional gyms, or who simply want more from their fitness journey than just aimless exercise. The core philosophy is built on teaching the foundation of weight training—focusing intensely on proper technique and safety. This approach makes it a perfect starting point for complete beginners, yet challenging enough for seasoned athletes. As many clients attest, the coaches here are "great," focused on helping you learn "good technique while pushing you to do your best," a process that transforms strength training from a chore into something genuinely anticipated.
Owned and led by highly credentialed coaches, including Tony (a 2nd or 3rd-degree Black Belt in BJJ and a seasoned strength coach), the gym is recognized for its ability to offer a diverse range of training options all under one roof. Whether your goal is to "build muscle & get stronger" after years of putting it off, or to learn practical self-defense and the intricacies of BJJ, ISG provides a supportive, professional, and results-driven environment that is changing its members' outlook on life and fitness.

Industrial Strength Gym is conveniently situated in the heart of North Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood, a location known for its community feel and ease of access for many residents in the 97203 zip code and surrounding North and Northwest areas.
The gym's address is:
8709 N Lombard St, Portland, OR 97203, USA
Being located on N Lombard Street, the gym is well-positioned for local users traveling from various parts of North Portland. Accessibility is a key feature, as the area typically offers ample street parking, which removes one of the common frustrations of working out in other parts of the city. The facility itself provides a clean and professional space for both rigorous strength workouts and martial arts training, complete with spacious, spotless changing rooms and private bathrooms with showers—a notable highlight for members training BJJ.
Services Offered
Industrial Strength Gym provides highly focused group and individual instruction across its two core areas, ensuring quality over quantity in all its programming.
- Small Group Personal Training (SGPT): These small, individualized classes are designed to bridge the gap between expensive one-on-one training and large, impersonal group fitness. They are an excellent way to learn foundational weight training, technique, and proper form with expert coaching.
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Classes: High-quality instruction in the martial art of BJJ, available for both adults and youth. Classes cater to all levels, from total beginners learning the most effective fundamentals to black belts looking for high-level drilling and rolling. The BJJ program is known for being a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment, including for women.
- Strength & Conditioning Classes: Group classes focusing on building functional strength, power, and overall conditioning, often utilizing specialized equipment like kettlebells and barbells in a class-based setting.
- Kettlebell Training: Industrial Strength Gym specializes heavily in kettlebell training, offering dedicated classes and even virtual "On-Ramp" courses for beginners to safely learn foundational movements like swings, presses, and Turkish Get-Ups.
- Competitive Weightlifting Team: For advanced athletes, the gym supports a competitive weightlifting team, demonstrating its commitment to high-level coaching and serious strength sports.
- One-on-One Personal Training: Individualized coaching sessions tailored to specific goals, whether for elite sport preparation, injury prevention, or focused strength development.
Features / Highlights
What makes Industrial Strength Gym stand out among other fitness facilities in the Oregon region are its unique combination of specialties and its dedicated coaching staff.
- Expert Coaching and Technique Focus: The gym’s most valued asset is its coaches, such as Tony, who are highly focused on ensuring every member learns "good technique." This emphasis on proper form eliminates the intimidation factor for beginners and prevents injury for experienced lifters.
- Intimidation-Free Environment: Industrial Strength is highly recommended for "anyone looking to learn and grow physically and mentally." The process of teaching the foundation of weight training is specifically designed to welcome individuals who "have no idea what they're doing," eliminating the fear often associated with lifting weights.
- Dual Expertise in Fitness and Martial Arts: The rare combination of legitimate, class-based strength training (kettlebells, barbells) and high-level BJJ instruction under one roof offers a complete mind-body training solution for diverse fitness goals.
- Strong Community and Culture: Members consistently praise the atmosphere, describing it as a "warm and supportive community of people who are all striving to help themselves—and one another." It's a friendly, safe, and welcoming place for adults and kids alike.
- High-Quality BJJ Program: Led by a seasoned black belt, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is respected for its knowledgeable instructors, clear, concise teaching style, and its welcoming environment for all, including women looking to train BJJ.
- Excellent Facilities: The gym is described as extraordinarily clean, with a great aesthetic, and features spacious, spotless changing rooms and private bathrooms with showers.

What is Worth Choosing Industrial Strength Gym
Choosing Industrial Strength Gym is a decision to prioritize effective, safe, and sustainable long-term results over quick-fix fitness trends. For Oregon locals, particularly in the Portland metro area, ISG stands out as the premier destination for two key reasons: personalized education and community integration.
Many people put off strength training due to intimidation or lack of knowledge. ISG completely removes this barrier through its excellent Small Group Personal Training classes and highly effective process for teaching fundamentals. You gain the benefits of personalized coaching—correcting alignments and tailoring workouts—at a group-friendly price. The feeling of going from having "no idea what you're doing" to genuinely looking forward to your strength session is a common, life-changing experience here.
Furthermore, the high-quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is not just an add-on; it is a central, expert offering. This blend of strength training (to build a resilient body) and BJJ (to build mental fortitude, skill, and practical self-defense) provides a holistic physical and mental overhaul that is rare to find. Whether you are a parent signing your child up for youth BJJ, a 71-year-old starting strength training for the first time, or a seasoned grappler, the knowledgeable and caring coaching staff and the "best gym in Portland" community culture make Industrial Strength Gym an essential resource for long-term health and growth in Oregon.

Industrial Strength Gym: Fitness & Jiu Jitsu Reviews
Feeling really fortunate that I found Industrial Strength!Coaches are great; all are focused on helping you learn good technique while pushing you to do your best. The small group personal training classes are a great way to get started if you have no idea what you're doing in the gym (like I did).I put off starting strength training for way too long, but now it's something I genuinely look forward to!
September 22 · Deirdre Lyons-KeefeIndustrial Strength Gym and specifically Tony is a wonderful resource for integrating fitness and strength training back into your routine. After years of putting it off, I was able to get back into the gym thanks to their process of teaching the foundation of weight training. Gone is the intimidation and now I feel motivated and excited to learn whether that’s a one on one session or the small group training. CANNOT SAY IT ENOUGH - this gym is changing my outlook on life and fitness and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn and grow physically and mentally
August 25 · Arianna TramesI visited Portland for the weekend with my husband and we came to Industrial Strength to get a little lifting in! Mira and everyone in the gym was incredibly welcoming, and made ample space for us to train well. The space is awesome, full of weightlifting relics and each platform has everything it needs. We will definitely be coming back when we're in the area :)
July 23 · Tali ZabariIndustrial Strength is the perfect gym if you are looking for a small, friendly, and serious community of like-minded strength enthusiasts who show up at the crack of dawn to lift heavy things up and then put them back down. This is the only gym I've stayed with year after year and watched myself improve and grow stronger. Owners Tony and Mira are terrific and our morning coach, Ross, rocks the free world.
April 18 · Joan Leah GibsonI was fresh off of a breakup and looking for a new hobby to revitalize myself when I discovered the sport of weightlifting. Being instantly captivated by it, I started gym shopping in Portland and talked to a few coaches at a few different gyms. I was looking for a place to learn the highly technical lifts from an experienced coach with a great team atmosphere. After talking with Mira, head coach of the weightlifting program at Industrial Strength in Portland, on the phone, I knew that I had found something special. I really appreciated that, instead of trying to sell me on her gym, she took the time to understand what I was looking for and make sure that her gym would be a good fit for me.Having been at the gym for four months now, I can honestly say that it has the best team training environment of any gym to which I have belonged. When I joined the gym, I knew that Mira would be a fantastic coach, and that has certainly been the case: her patience, attention to detail, and her simple, effective cues have helped me improve my form and increase my strength in a very short amount of time. What I did not expect to find at the gym was a community of hilarious, supportive, and loving lifters who make me look forward to coming to the gym every day. At the risk of sounding trite, it feels like something of a miracle in our modern, disconnected world to find true community, and that is a testament not only to the wonderful members who make up the gym, but to Mira herself, who continually creates a space for us all to show up as our most authentic selves and get better at this weird sport we call weightlifting. Thank you, Mira and the weightlifting team at Industrial Strength!
