Greenwich Village Athletic (GVA) Introduce
In the bustling landscape of New York City, finding a gym that truly feels like home is a rare and valuable discovery. Greenwich Village Athletic (GVA) at 650 Broadway is that rare gem. This is a gym that has, according to its members, gone beyond the traditional concept of a fitness center to become a connection-forming community. GVA is built on the philosophy that fitness is not just about the workout, but also about the people you share the journey with. It's a place where you can find a supportive "squad" that holds you accountable and motivates you to be your best self, both inside and outside the gym.
The core of GVA's appeal lies in its strong community-oriented model, which is a significant factor for many New Yorkers seeking social connection. Reviews consistently highlight this aspect, with members talking about "squad dinners, recovery coffee chats, Central Park shake outs, foam rolling with friends, or Hamptons houses." This shows that GVA is a place where you don't just sweat together; you build genuine friendships. This unique approach to fitness makes accountability feel easy, as you're not just showing up for a workout, but for your friends.
GVA also stands out for its inclusive atmosphere. It is an LGBTQ+ friendly space and a declared transgender safespace, which is a crucial factor for many in the city who are looking for a welcoming and non-judgmental environment to pursue their fitness goals. This commitment to inclusivity is a testament to the gym’s mission to be a true community gym for everyone.
The quality of the training is also a major highlight. The gym specializes in high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength & conditioning, providing members with a structured and effective way to get in shape. Members rave about the "top notch" programming and the exceptional coaches who provide a unique blend of expertise and motivation. For example, coaches are praised for their "boundless positivity," "energetic encouragement," and ability to "thoroughly kick your butt and then leave you wanting to do it all over again the next day." The personal attention and expert guidance from the coaches are what make members see tangible progress in their fitness journey and overall strength.
A satisfied member noted, "I have loved my experience at GVA so far, and can already see the progress in my fitness journey and overall strength." Another review praised a coach, saying, "Rachel always brings the best energy!!" This kind of personal and positive feedback is a powerful indicator of the gym's commitment to creating a great experience for every member.

What is worth choosing
For a New Yorker, choosing a gym is not just about the equipment; it's about finding a place that fits into your lifestyle and provides the motivation to keep coming back. Greenwich Village Athletic (GVA) is an excellent choice for a number of reasons. First and foremost, its revolutionary "squad" concept and community-first approach set it apart from typical gyms. This model addresses a common challenge for many in the city: staying accountable. By joining a squad, you're not just a member; you're part of a team. The social bonds that form make workouts feel less like a chore and more like a social gathering, which is a powerful motivator. The fact that the community extends beyond the gym, with planned social events, further solidifies this appeal.
The gym's dedication to inclusivity is another compelling reason to join. Being an LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safespace ensures that everyone who walks through the door feels welcome and respected. In a city as diverse as New York, this commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment is invaluable.
Furthermore, the quality of the coaching and programming is consistently praised. The coaches are not just instructors; they are experts who provide personalized guidance and an infectious energy that inspires members to push their limits. The focus on strength and conditioning and HIIT means you're not just working out aimlessly; you're following a proven program designed to produce real, measurable results. As one review noted, this leads to noticeable progress in strength and overall fitness.
While some may find the squad structure to be "culty" from the outside, as some online discussions suggest, members' reviews clarify that this "closeness" is what makes the gym so effective and enjoyable. The close-knit nature of the squads is a feature, not a bug, for those who are seeking to make friends and build a support system around their fitness goals. For New Yorkers who are tired of large, impersonal gyms and are looking for a place where they can find both a challenging workout and a strong sense of community, Greenwich Village Athletic is an exceptional choice.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Many NYC gyms aspire to be “more than a gym” these days — FLA is the club that has truly nailed it. It is a connection-forming community that happens to routinely work out together. I’ve found it to be an invitation to challenge and strengthen myself while being inspired by supportive squad mates. Strong bonds within squads make accountability feel easy. Whether it is squad dinners, recovery coffee chats, Central Park shake outs, foam rolling with friends, or Hamptons houses, there are plenty of opportunities to see that FLA is more than a place to sweat together. Of course, the weekly training and phase programming is top notch. The instructors are simply the best: Coach Cherry’s boundless positivity and energetic encouragement amps us up to rock any workout. You can always count on Coach Miguel who is a true expert in motivation to help you find another gear and show up for yourself even at 05:45. Coach Kara will thoroughly kick your butt and then leave you wanting to do it all over again the next day. I wouldn’t be feeling the results without FLA’s exceptional squad trainers. This club has it all — the coaches, the community and the collective goal of achieving fitness with friends. FLA is simply how training should be done.
