The transition to a new location at 9134 Mentor Ave has brought about changes that have been met with both disappointment and gradual acceptance among members. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I really have loved working out at fitworks in mentor. However I’m very disappointed with the new location. Went from spacious and comfortable to cramped. They also got rid of some really good machines. I was excited for the new location as I was expecting an upgrade, but instead it was a significant downgrade in my opinion. The rent must be cheaper at this location, because there’s no way management could see this spot as an upgrade. 2 stars instead of 1 because of how much I loved the old gym.
July 11 · Tommy ClaymanDefinitely loved the old location a little more because it’s more spacious, but the new one is starting to warm up on me., I just ask that maybe someone could clean after hours it’s pretty rough when I get there between 1-130, paper towels everywhere also maybe some exterminating, i see lots of red ants and spiders and just weird insects in the locker rooms and going into them., the sauna has been down for awhile just wondering will it be up soon locker rooms are pretty small but I’m there to get my workout in I also have 3 other gyms because I enjoy using different equipment and different atmospheres , fitworks equipment is 10 out of 10 but they did let go of some really good old equipment that I truly miss but I still love it this is my honest review!
August 09 · Shavon WatsonI have loved being a fitworks member (aside from the literally criminal billing company) for probably 7 or more years now, so I am very disappointed to see them change their business model so drastically. Before, it was a real gym, with real regulars, a great upbeat atmosphere, clean machines, etc. They have transitioned to something I can only compare to a kind of “elderly anytime fitness” blended with a moody influencer space that isn't designed for actual use, or other small, inexpensive gyms catering to older folks that want to say they have a gym but never go.If that sound impossibly dysfunctional, that's because it is.Its sad too, not just because of what members lost, but also because it seems like they put a lot of effort into the space. The effort though, was sorely misdirected, and could have been prevented with a properly consultant, knowledge, or some other experts to prevent this disaster of a “new coke 2.0.”New location is easily less than one third the useable space, if not a fourth. Its tough to quanitfy because they packed so much into such a small space, that its like that college auxiliary gym in an old mat storage room that every college has.Equipment volume of key pieces also took a hit, and good luck ever using the function of nal fitness area, cables, or other larger pieces. But really the cramped square footage and complete lack of open space for walkways, excercising with kettlebells and freeweights, stretching, or even enough room around equipmen weights to access or move anything kills any chance of actual gym goers continuing their membership. The new location is designed to say “we look like a gym in photos” without any real substance of a functional gym.The second biggest loss is the physical environment. Not only did it become super dark and moody, with sunlight significantly curtailed from above and in front, but the sound problems in the space result in headaches rather quickly. Sound insulation and dampening as a combo could resolve the noise issues, along with better speakers. But there's no profitable way to fix the light problems without not just a new ceiling and wall paint job, but on the far more expensive side, adding skylights, and moving the exercise class room to the back. What made them paint the ceiling black and the walls dark gray in a space with hardly any exterior light or interior lighting is beyond human comprehension.Fitworks is a part of my day I used to look forward too, now its beyond dreary, noisy, and a place I cant wait to leave. The third major issue is the exercise class area. While I never used the old one, I spoke to some of the ladies there I know from seeing them daily at the old location, and they all noted that they are looking at other locations for classes. They have been made to feel very uncomfortable with the new layout, and like its a “peeping toms paradise.” They are forced to be fish in a fishbowl for the hometown buffet attendees and the gym patrons walking in front with literally a couple of feet of the class attendees. The biggest issue of all is the loss of community. Not only because this gym will either go out of business, or become one of those gym nobody uses, but because there is quite literally no space for anyone to chat and get to know each other. And if you want someone to spot you, good luck, there's no room. The functional fitness areas is so cramped that the only place to use the equipment is immediately (within inches not feet) of where you access the equipment, which means only one person can use the area at one time due to its width and the equipment locations.Overall, this is a real bummer. Especially because it was billed as a “major upgrade.”Maybe they were losing money before and needed to transition business models. Or maybe this is a bigger failure than “new coke.” but either way, I signed up for Titans today, and the Fitworks era has died. If the owner sees this, best of luck, sincerely, im sorry to see my gym go. And Ps, I need to cancel my membership.
July 12 · Benjamin SimerlyReally disappointed in the new facility. I have been a member of the club for over 20 years but will be cancelling my membership and looking elsewhere. When I first entered the new space, I immediately noticed the lack of air flow. It was very warm and stuffy.I looked to the cardio area and was sad to see the lack of variety in machines. The area is dominated by treadmills and stair machines - the 2 most limiting cardio machines for people whith back and knee problems. They had 3 different ellipital machines at the old gym that i used regularly. The new gym elliptical machines are all the same and do not have an incline that can be adjusted. The weight lifting equipment in the new space is very crammed together. It's difficult to walk around and even get full range of motion in some cases.Having to fight for parking is also not ideal. A single person restroom for a space that size has to be illegal. They should have stayed in the old location. They had a good thing going there.
July 14 · Melissa PareyWas better when it was at the end of the plaza now their parking makes it terrible for Americas best and Fuji worst idea ever they need to tell their people to park WAY far in the back. Y'all health nuts can walk the 90 year olds trying to eat or get glasses get screwed
