What is Worth Choosing
For residents of Illinois, particularly those in Skokie and the surrounding suburbs, Fitness First Health Club is a worthwhile choice for a variety of reasons. What makes it compelling is its comprehensive range of facilities and amenities within a public, community-focused setting. The gym provides everything you need for a full workout, from cardio equipment and a dedicated weight-lifting area to a Pilates studio and an indoor running track. The availability of amenities like the sauna, steam room, and even on-site day care makes it a convenient and practical option for a diverse range of people, including busy parents.
The most significant consideration for potential members is the gym's public/city-owned status. This can have both positive and negative implications. On one hand, it may offer more affordable rates for residents and a greater sense of community, as it is a public service. On the other hand, as one review points out, the staff may operate with different policies and attitudes than those found in a private, customer-centric business. For those who are new to working out or prefer a more relaxed approach, the strict enforcement of rules might be a deterrent. However, for people who want a clean, well-equipped, and functional facility without the high price tag of a private gym, it is an excellent option.
In conclusion, Fitness First Health Club at the Weber Leisure Center is a solid, functional, and well-equipped gym that gets the job done. Its strengths lie in its comprehensive offerings, useful amenities, and commitment to accessibility. For residents who prioritize a straightforward, no-nonsense workout environment with a variety of equipment and a strong community feel, this is a top-tier choice in the Illinois area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Great place to work out. Staff is nice. They have instructors to help with learning machines. There is a sauna and other amenities such as a fairly medium-sized dressing room, which is clean and a steam room. They also provide an indoor track where you can walk or run, which is great in the winter. They also offer classes. They even offered a fencing class. The fitness ctr seems to be busy between 11:00 and 1:00. There is always parking unless something is going on at the skating Arena. Good place to join.
July 11 · Pamela StavinogaUnfortunately I can only give this gym 2-stars because of the way this gym is run. The Weber Center Fitness First facillity is a really clean and up-to-date gym that has all of the equipment you would need for a full workout routine. The gym is public/city owned which means that the staff there are all city park district employees (retired or close to retired city workers) who do not actually have any sports or exercise training, and have no reason to treat members as customers. They have city funding and don't care about your membership. The staff can be very aggressive with telling you what to do in the gym and actively walk around the gym floor watching. Some examples:- I have seen people get "warnings" for running "too hard" on the treadmills; also "lifting too much" or "slamming" when the weights make noise by re-racking them or clank when they touch a surface. Even when being put away. The weights aren't being slammed but making ANY noise will cause a staff member to confront you.- The floor is reinforced for weight training (hard rubber) but people are not allowed to do deadlifts, cleans, rows, hip thrusts, or other floor exercises where a weight will touch the floor. A staff member will confront people if they see it.- Even on the weight machines, if the stack makes even a small slapping sound as you put it down, staff members will run up and accuse you of "slamming."- On a cold days people do get told they're not allowed to wear windbreakers or light jackets. They will make you put the jacket in a locker because " winter coats aren't allowed on the gym floor" due to being a tripping or catching hazard apparently.I give 2-stars because the Weber Center has a comprehensive and clean weight area, cardio area, and a small fitness studio in the back. There are plenty of weight racks and weight-stack machines. However, having said that, this is not a real "gym" in the way that an LA Fitness or XSport would be. The staff runs it more strictly and worse than a stereotypical Planet Fitness. I would only recommend if you just want a place to maybe have an easy jog on a treadmill and do some quiet bicep curls in the mirror- if you want more then go to a more serious gym.
