Features / Highlights
This North Portland studio’s features emphasize a balance between quality instruction and a commitment to community.
- High-Quality Instruction and Variety: Recognized as a favorite studio in Portland by long-term members, the teachers are consistently praised for being knowledgeable, supportive, and offering a variety of classes that cater to all needs, including those recovering from injuries or surgeries.
- Deep Commitment to Inclusivity: The studio actively fosters an inclusive culture, operating as an LGBTQ+ friendly and Transgender Safespace. This is backed by concrete action, including free weekly classes specifically for the BIPOC and Queer/Trans communities, as well as an Equity Scholarship Fund.
- Flexible Class Formats: With options ranging from Hot Vinyasa to unheated Gentle Flow, plus a digital subscription platform and live-stream classes, the studio provides maximum flexibility for the Oregon lifestyle.
- Recognized for Community Focus: The owners, co-founders Holly Bussmus and Jessica Bartley, have been celebrated for building a studio that is “Built on Friendship, Fueled by Community,” actively giving back to local non-profits and schools.
- Safety and Comfort Amenities: The studio provides private locker rooms with showers, plus a gender-neutral restroom, and offers complimentary sweat towels and toiletries, enhancing the overall member experience.
- Active Military Discounts: A recognition of service members through offered discounts, furthering the studio's commitment to community support.
- Note on Instruction Style: While many appreciate the high quality of instruction, it is important for prospective members to be aware that the style can, at times, be highly prescriptive. Some students have reported instances where instructors intervened when they deviated from the set routine. This suggests a studio culture that highly prioritizes precision and adherence to the teacher's instructions, and members should be prepared to communicate any specific needs or modifications clearly with their instructor beforehand.

What is Worth Choosing
For those living in Oregon, especially in or around Portland, Firelight Yoga stands out as an exceptional choice for those seeking a deeply rooted community and a professionally varied yoga practice. What makes this studio truly worth choosing is the powerful combination of its extensive class menu and its unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.
The breadth of styles—from intense Hot Power Vinyasa to gentle Restorative Yin, and even Power Sculpt—means you never have to seek another studio for variation. Furthermore, the ability to transition seamlessly between Onsite, Online, and On-Demand classes ensures that your fitness routine remains flexible and resilient to life’s inevitable changes.
However, the critical differentiating factor is the ethos of the women-owned business, which centers on profound community support. The financial accessibility options, such as sliding scale fees, the equity scholarship, and the free classes for marginalized communities, demonstrate that Firelight Yoga genuinely strives to live up to its mission of making wellness available to everyone in Portland, OR.
When selecting a yoga home, it is essential to consider the instructional style. Firelight Yoga's teachers are professional and highly trained, which translates to the highly structured, intentional nature of their classes. While this strong guidance is a benefit to many (ensuring proper form and safety), individuals who prefer to practice entirely autonomously or who frequently perform significant, spontaneous deviations from instruction should be prepared to respectfully communicate their needs to the teacher before class. This proactive approach will help you maximize the benefits of the high-quality, professional instruction, while honoring your own body's requirements within the class's structured environment. Ultimately, you are choosing a studio that values both community spirit and a high standard of yoga education.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Time flies… I’ve been a member since 2017 and it’s still my favorite studio in Portland. Over the years I’ve taken a few breaks here and there as I moved out of town- but I always find myself back to Firelight. I love the teachers, they have a variety of classes, heated + non heated. High intensity, medium intensity and very little movement with more of a stretch focus. I’ve had a few injuries and surgeries but have always found a class that fits my needs during those times as well. Highly recommend this studio!
July 02 · Silvia N-RGood unless you need to go off the teachers scripted routine. Then they I intervene.I enjoyed this place for most of the year I was there. Many instructors were very nice and the space is clean.Near the end of my time there, however, multiple instructors started complaining mid-class that I needed to do what they were doing the whole time. Sometimes I didn't like a pose they were doing, or it was uncomfortable for me, so I would simply do other poses in those moments. The response was for instructors to interrupt lessons to tell me to stop and do what they were saying. Two times instructors came over and tried to physically change what I was doing. I should have left after the first time.At first I thought this was manageable: I started moving to the back of the room, and didn't go back to that instructor again. The second time, I spoke to one of the co-owners, who made a point to not only not apologize for anything or even acknowledge that what their employees did was wrong in any way. They tried to say without saying that I should follow what the instructor says at all times. I left after that.Very disappointed I lost my favorite hot yoga studio. But I don't want to pay for the privilege of being pushed around and touched without permission because a teacher is too insecure to tolerate one person not follow their every word.Edit: after reading the owner's scripted response to this review, I can see we agree on one thing: talking to them is a truly forgettable experience. I will take this wisdom to heart.
August 20 · JennI don’t even know where to begin. This studio has been a refuge to me. I have found a true yoga practice here. I don’t know where my mental health would be without the classes and teachers here. There’s more to say than I can type in a public review but I have so much gratitude for this place. The teachers at firelight are a cut above and I walk away from every single unique class having deepened my practice, my mind body connection and my presence in the moment. I always find hat I need here whether it’s a sweaty workout or mental clarity or a safe space of peace.
July 11 · Jenna EllefsonI can’t say enough good things about this studio. The owners are wonderful people, the instructors are high quality and it is extremely clean and thoughtfully cared for. Shout out to my favorite instructors: Majo, Heather, Lex, and Leah! 🫶🏻
July 30 · Hayley McAllisterI was visiting from out of town and wanted to make sure I continued my practice. The staff were very welcoming as a first timer. I had a great class with Leah!
