Edgewater Athletic Club Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For residents across Illinois, particularly those in the northern neighborhoods of Chicago, the Edgewater Athletic Club (EAC) offers a truly unique and full-service neighborhood gym experience. Situated in the historic Sovereign building, the club seamlessly blends an evocative, vintage atmosphere with comprehensive modern fitness facilities. The club is not a high-end luxury spa, but rather a no-frills gym that prioritizes providing a full range of athletic amenities at what members often describe as very reasonable prices.
What immediately sets the Edgewater Athletic Club apart is its distinctive setting. The primary workout area has been ingeniously transformed from the building's original Grand Ballroom, meaning members can enjoy their strength training or cardio routines under chandeliers, an architectural flair that adds a charming and memorable backdrop to every workout.
Identifying as a full-service Gym, Athletic Club, and Fitness Center, the EAC is especially valued for its expansive aquatics program, featuring a sizable Indoor Swimming Pool. This makes it an ideal choice for swimmers, families looking for Swim Club opportunities and lessons, or anyone seeking a low-impact cardio option. While the club maintains a vintage charm, offering a strong sense of community and friendly front-desk staff, it covers all the core requirements for a serious fitness regimen—free weights, cardio equipment, group classes, and crucial recovery features like a sauna. This combination of historical character, essential fitness offerings, and a community focus makes it a solid choice for the local Illinois user.

What is Worth Choosing
The Edgewater Athletic Club is an excellent choice for Illinois residents, especially those in the Edgewater and Rogers Park areas of Chicago, who value substance and unique character over modern luxury. Choosing the EAC means investing in a well-rounded fitness regimen that includes aquatic options, strength training, and essential recovery tools, all within a memorable, historic setting.
The Aquatic Advantage: Unlike many smaller neighborhood gyms, the inclusion of a 5-lane indoor pool is a substantial offering. For serious swimmers, those with physical therapy needs, or parents looking for accessible and affordable swim lessons for the kids, the EAC's dedicated aquatics program is a major differentiator.
An Atmosphere with Character: For individuals tired of the cookie-cutter corporate gym aesthetic, working out under the chandeliers of a preserved ballroom provides an inspiring and non-traditional environment. This vintage vibe contributes to the strong community feel, often described as a friendly, no-frills experience where the focus remains squarely on the workout itself.
Holistic Wellness Services: The club goes beyond mere weights and treadmills by integrating Sauna, Steam Room, and professional Massage Therapy (with highly-praised specialists) into its offering. This dedication to recovery and soft tissue work provides a more complete wellness solution that is typically found only at much higher-priced athletic clubs.
While some reviews suggest the equipment and locker rooms carry that "vintage" feel and could benefit from upgrades, the very reasonable prices and the core, unique amenities—the pool, the sauna, and the historic ballroom setting—make the Edgewater Athletic Club a worthwhile neighborhood institution for the budget-conscious and community-minded fitness enthusiast in Illinois. It delivers a solid, full-service athletic club experience where the staff are attentive and the facilities are comprehensive.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Dropped $59 for a monthly membership at Edgewater Athletic Club, hoping for a solid neighborhood gym experience. The vintage vibe is charming, but the equipment feels outdated, and the locker rooms could use some TLC. Had issues with billing—was charged after canceling, and communication was lacking. Appreciate the community feel, but the management needs to step up.
May 07 · Burger MataNo frills gym but the prices are very reasonable. Phillip and Jordan were helpful at the front desk and the BEST MASSEUSE works here. Aaron Hanna does the best soft tissue work and you go through the gym to get to his office. The gym is unique because it is in an old ballroom so there are literally chandeliers in the workout area!!!I want to check out swim lessons here for the kids 10 sessions for $70/hr!
March 21 · Jackie Acker Garland (Chicago Photo Mom)Been a member for a few months now. One of the best things about this gym is no sketchy shady contracts like I've encountered at other gyms. They were straight forward with pricing where you can do it month to month, up to annual up front, where longer terms will get you a bigger discount with a 30 day cancellation policy. Everyone who works there is friendly and it's pretty clean. There is a pool, and free towels. I haven't done the massage or any of the classes yet, but really like this gym.
January 16 · Jacob H.Very expensive for the state that the gym is at. Everything is very old and rusty.I went specifically for the pool. Different people gave me different pool schedules, which was very confusing on when pool is available or not.Pool itself is nice, mostly clean. 18 meters long, half is 3 feet deep and other half is about 6 feet deep. Warm water, comfortable to swim in.They have 30 days cancellation policy, so I went to cancel my membership and asked until when can I still access the gym. They said my membership renews tomorrow, so they simply won’t enforce 30 days cancelation policy, took my key tag and said I am good to go. But this morning they charged me again. Called them, they said sorry for mistake, but we don’t do refunds. The cancellation quest will probably not be such a problem for the most people.
January 05 · Aleksey LichtmanSolid gym with older but high-quality equipment and plenty of machines and weights. The pool is well-maintained and the sauna is currently working after a time of disrepair. The staff is friendly enough but often can't answer questions or channel suggestions or requests - what you see is what you get. (Except the photos on the website. Some of that stuff is nothing like the actual club. Take with a grain of salt.) Very satisfactory club if your goal is exercise without frills.
