Dharma Yoga Center Introduce
In the vibrant and often overwhelming landscape of New York City, finding a place that offers true spiritual and physical refuge can be a profound discovery. Dharma Yoga Center is not just another yoga studio; it is a legendary institution that has served as a beacon of classical yoga for decades. Founded by world-renowned yoga master Sri Dharma Mittra, the center offers a deep and transformative practice that goes far beyond physical postures. It is a space where New Yorkers can explore yoga as a complete system for self-realization, encompassing physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. The center's reputation is built on its commitment to authentic, traditional teachings that have been passed down for generations. The atmosphere is one of profound dedication and respect for the ancient practice, making it an ideal destination for both seasoned yogis and curious newcomers alike. The studio’s approach is a stark contrast to many modern, fitness-oriented gyms, as it prioritizes a holistic and deeply personal journey toward wellness and self-awareness.
Dharma Yoga Center is conveniently situated in a central and easily accessible location at 46 W 24 St, on the Lobby Floor, in New York, NY 10010, USA. This address places the studio in the heart of the Flatiron District, a bustling neighborhood known for its historic architecture, technology companies, and diverse retail and dining options. For New York locals, this prime location means the studio is easily reachable via public transportation. It is a short walk from major subway lines, including the F, M, R, W, and 1 trains, making it a simple commute from nearly any part of Manhattan, as well as parts of Brooklyn and Queens. While there is paid street parking available, many New Yorkers find that taking the subway is the most convenient way to get to the studio. The lobby-floor location ensures easy access for all visitors, and the presence of a wheelchair-accessible restroom further enhances its inclusivity. The tranquil environment within the studio provides a welcome escape from the constant energy of the city streets outside, allowing practitioners to fully immerse themselves in their practice without external distractions.
Dharma Yoga Center offers a comprehensive range of services that cater to all levels of practitioners, from beginners to aspiring teachers. The services are rooted in the classical Hatha-Raja Yoga tradition and are designed to foster holistic development. These services include:
- Group Lessons: The studio offers a variety of group classes that are suitable for students of all levels. These classes are well-structured and organized, often incorporating a combination of physical postures, breathing exercises (Pranayama), meditation, and deep relaxation. The flow and sequencing of poses are designed to build strength and flexibility while also preparing the body and mind for deeper spiritual work. These classes are known to be both challenging and deeply nourishing, fostering a sense of community among practitioners.
- Private Lessons: For those who prefer a more individualized approach, private lessons are available. These sessions allow for a customized practice that is tailored to the client's specific needs and goals. Whether you are looking to refine your form, work on a particular pose, or receive personalized guidance on your spiritual journey, a private lesson provides the dedicated attention necessary for accelerated progress.
- Online Classes: Recognizing the need for flexibility and accessibility, the center offers online classes. This option allows students to learn from the comfort of their home, making it convenient for those with busy schedules or for students located outside of the NYC area. The online platform ensures that the authentic teachings of Dharma Yoga can reach a wider audience, maintaining the integrity and depth of the practice even in a virtual format.
- Teacher Training Certifications: The Dharma Yoga Center is renowned for its comprehensive teacher training programs. These trainings are designed to provide aspiring teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach Dharma Yoga. The curriculum is extensive, covering everything from physical and psychic anatomy to sacred texts, breathing techniques, meditation, and ethical principles. The trainings are intense, immersive experiences that are offered both in-person and online, with the goal of preparing students to share the practice with authenticity and kindness.
What sets Dharma Yoga Center apart from other fitness and yoga studios in New York City are its unique features and its profound spiritual foundation. The studio’s approach is deeply rooted in tradition and is led by a master with decades of experience.
- The Vision of Sri Dharma Mittra: At the heart of the center is Sri Dharma Mittra himself, a revered "teacher's teacher" who has been sharing his wisdom since the 1960s. His presence and teachings are a major highlight for students, who describe him as a unique source of inspiration, wisdom, and humility. The opportunity to learn directly from a master of his caliber is a rare and highly valued experience.
- Focus on Traditional Yoga: Unlike many contemporary yoga styles that focus solely on the physical aspects, Dharma Yoga is a complete system that includes ethical precepts (Yamas), spiritual philosophy, and devotional practices. This holistic approach means that classes often include more than just physical postures; they also incorporate deep relaxation (Yoga Nidra), breathing exercises, and meditation, providing a truly comprehensive practice.
- Inclusive and Dedicated Community: The studio cultivates a community of dedicated practitioners who are supportive and kind. While some may find the traditional approach and challenging poses intimidating, many students praise the supportive and encouraging atmosphere. The center is a place where teachers are knowledgeable and deeply committed to their students' growth, both on and off the mat.
- Amenities and Convenience: The studio is equipped with a restroom and offers a convenient payment system, accepting credit and debit cards. Appointments are recommended to ensure a smooth and personalized experience. While some street parking is available, the excellent public transportation access makes it easy for most New Yorkers to get there without a car.
For those interested in connecting with Dharma Yoga Center, the studio is located at 46 W 24 St, Lobby Floor, New York, NY 10010, USA. You can reach them by phone at (212) 889-8160. Given that appointments are recommended, calling ahead is the best way to ensure you have all the information you need before your first visit. The staff is known for being responsive and helpful, providing a smooth entry into their community. The direct and simple contact information reflects the studio’s professional and straightforward approach to its services. Whether you are seeking a one-time class, a personal session, or more information about their teacher training programs, reaching out directly is the recommended first step to experience all that the center has to offer. This streamlined communication process is another aspect of the center's commitment to making the practice of yoga accessible and organized for a busy urban population.
When considering a yoga studio in New York City, Dharma Yoga Center is an exceptional choice for several significant reasons. The most compelling reason is its authenticity. In an era where many yoga studios are commercialized, Dharma Yoga Center remains a bastion of traditional and spiritual practice. Learning from Sri Dharma Mittra, or the teachers he has trained, provides a unique opportunity to connect with the roots of yoga in a way that is difficult to find elsewhere. This focus on the "essence of yoga" is what makes the experience truly transformative for many students. While one review notes some concern about the teaching style, another review highlights the "incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and deeply dedicated" nature of the teachers. The studio’s teaching style, which encourages students to try challenging asanas like headstands, can be intense for some, but it is also viewed as a powerful way to break through mental and physical barriers. It is worth noting that like any practice involving physical exertion, it is important for individuals to be mindful of their own body’s limits and listen to guidance from the teachers who are there to provide support. The balance of a demanding physical practice with deep spiritual teachings makes for a truly holistic workout. It is not just about building a strong body; it’s about cultivating a clear mind and a compassionate heart. For a New Yorker seeking more than just a workout—someone looking for a community and a path toward self-discovery—Dharma Yoga Center offers an unparalleled and enriching experience that can profoundly impact their life.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I can only echo what some other people have written a less favourable review. I didn’t feel good at this place. Something felt off about this Dharma person. Very demeaning to new students. Hard to explain. Calling yourself ‘Sri’ is also a dead give-away. People who go there seem nice enough but also incredibly naive and impressionable. You should also be aware that some of the exercises he pushes like head stands can also lead to serious lifelong injuries. I noticed people trying it who definitely shouldn’t be doing these things. Carefully read what other reviewers have written about his style of teaching. Don’t sign that waiver.
August 28 · Andy JonesI’ve been attending online classes and yoga teacher training at Dharma Yoga Center, and the experience has been truly transformative. All of the teachers are incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and deeply dedicated to sharing the essence of yoga. Every class is well-structured, organized, and conducted with genuine care.Sri Dharma Mittra is a unique source of inspiration. His wisdom, humility, and presence shine through, even online. It’s a blessing to be able to learn from him and from the amazing community he has cultivated.Highly recommended for anyone seeking authentic yoga, whether online or in person.
July 12 · Nikolina KuharI recently completed the 200-hour teaching immersion at the Dharma Yoga Center in NYC, and it was an incredible experience. The studio is stunning, with a bright yellow and gold room that exudes positive energy from every corner, making me feel comfortable the moment I walked in. The staff and mentors were some of the most wonderful people I've ever met—kind, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable.During my two weeks there, we participated in public classes, which was an exciting opportunity. The room was electrified with energy whenever Sir Dharma Mitra taught. His spiritual lectures were engaging and insightful, reflecting his deep connection to his practice and years of learning. He communicates with a personable style and a delightful sense of humor, reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously. Remarkably, he often answered our questions intuitively, as if he could sense what we needed to know. The experience was so powerful that it was difficult to return to everyday life. I cannot wait to return to the studio and immerse myself in its spiritual atmosphere again. I also hope to continue my learning and pursue a 500-hour teacher training in the future. The people and the experience were truly remarkable, and words cannot fully capture the essence of it.
July 31 · Emily BoyerWhy the Dharma Training? My experience from the 200hour Dharma Teacher Training in 2024:It is one of the very few worldwide trainings with an authentic Guru! The program is very extensive and includes next to the general Yoga Teachings also special Classes such as Partner Yoga, Cooking course and Psychic Development. The Teachers as Karmic Yogis; they are very understanding, no matter what emotion you are going through. They hold a safe space to do your work. The Studio Manager is very considerate. Everyday during my Training, she organised a small treat during the breaks. The studio has the most beautiful Shala that I have ever seen. It looks golden like a temple, with beautiful paintings and ornaments even at the ceiling. So no matter in which asana you are, you can be inspired. The Shala is also treatened like a temple. Every blanket has been folded by love and placed neatly in the shelfs. All over, it is very clean and feels like home. There is a lot of equipment at the studio. The cushions, blankets etc. are all high quality and various. You will learn to use a Dharma Wheel. Its was mind-blowing chest-opening for me.Dharma teaches you tricks for specifically difficult asanas.Dharma has a very deep understanding of Karma. You think you understand Karma? Come there and listen to Dharma…This is a very devotional Teacher Training. You will grow into making yoga a self-less act.I loved the music in Dharmas Classes. Everything about his Classes is very happy - the energy, his jokes and the music.
March 09 · Joyce D.I couldn't make to any of the Dharma's class because my appointments crashed with his schedule. So I arranged a private yoga session with their instructor Azusa, which she took good care of me and taught me well.Ive exchanged more than 10 emails with front desk and the director of Dharma Yoga weeks ago before I came visit about having the private yoga session. After the class they suddenly cut it short from 90 mins to 60 mins and blamed it on the teacher and said she had engagement. They didnt notify me before class so I asked for a refund nicely and they said 60 min private and 90 private would charge the same.I had a call with the director directly and she wasn't too nice and responded with what would you want us to charge, I asked how much you want to charge? she said whatever you want without apologizing.I am sure many students would come because of dharma, but i strongly recommend anyone not to private class there because of the poor customer service. This is the worst experience I have ever had since practicing Yoga.
