BLDG 440 Gym / NAVSTA Great Lakes MWR Fieldhouse Introduce
For the military community and authorized patrons in the Illinois region, maintaining physical readiness and overall well-being is a priority, and the **BLDG 440 Gym / NAVSTA Great Lakes MWR Fieldhouse** serves as the primary hub for achieving these goals. Located on Naval Station Great Lakes, this facility is recognized as the largest Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) fitness and recreational center on the installation. It is a comprehensive fieldhouse designed to support the "Fitness for Life" objective for active-duty personnel, their families, and other eligible members of the Great Lakes community.
More than just a weight room, BLDG 440 is a major facility housing extensive exercise equipment, an indoor aquatic center, and multiple sport courts. It provides the necessary resources to support a variety of training goals, from strength and cardio conditioning to aquatic programming and competitive intramural sports. While the access is restricted to authorized MWR patrons (Active-Duty, Retirees, Dependents, and DoD employees), for those who are eligible in the Illinois area, this fieldhouse represents a valuable and robust option for health and fitness.
However, it is important to note that, as a military facility, the operational environment is uniquely structured. Feedback from some patrons indicates that the facility's enforcement of rules and policies—such as limitations on equipment usage, one-hour time limits, restrictions on bags inside the gymnasium area, and the required separation of outdoor and indoor footwear—can be strict and, at times, inconsistent or frustrating. These rules, while often intended for safety, cleanliness, and asset preservation in a high-traffic military setting, create a distinctive user experience. Patrons should be prepared to adhere to the base's specific regulations and be mindful of the communication of these rules by the staff.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Ridiculous rules and overbearing staff. You can't have a speaker playing music for a basketball tournament because if another group of people also brought a speaker, the music would be too loud? It's a gymnasium! A good fix to that is allow one speaker for the whole court. 3 basketballs max "per group" when i wasn't even in the group and just practicing my shot on my own. Tried to tell them this, but they wouldn't let me get a ball. No backpacks in the gym, even in the stands out of the way.The pool was nice, but other than that, it really made for an uncomfortable experience with the staff breathing down our necks with random rules that didn't pertain to safety or condition of the gym at all.
August 24 · JamesConstantly irritating gym experience. You are only allowed to be in the gym for one hour. Lack of equipment means you will have to wait for every machine. End result is using your one hour to get on 2 or 3 machines (if you are lucky.) Winter time, have to dress in extra winter gear. Additional pair of shoes is required to get in. You can not have a locker or bring a backpack. Make due with filthy milk crate. Staff communicate rules poorly, constantly adding new ones or changing old ones depending on their mood. Going to this gym is always a frustrating experience and the only other option is to not go at all.
February 18 · Firston LastlyMore equipment would be great. Maybe be an Air Force base? Hours are odd. Hire more people, or.... be like the Air Force and use the 31 ASVAB scorers to man the gym?
April 23 · Kenneth MaddenOk gym. Only three treadmills. No stair machine. Good open weight room. No Olympic platforms for cleans or dead lifts. Has a indoor track. Locker room closed due to covid. 25 foot pool only four lanes.
October 21 · C Wyes this place is great for military member but as of right now I can gaurantee that I will never come back. The restrictions from covid that they have put in place are way overboard. They are made more ridiculous with more restrictions amlost every week. Restrictions that were deemed not needed by the government. I the way this place is ran is 100% not satisfactory. I will never come back to this place.
