AstaYoga Introduce
For California residents seeking depth, challenge, and authenticity in their yoga journey, AstaYoga in San Francisco represents a truly unique and transformative destination. In a crowded wellness landscape, this studio stands apart, not merely as a place to take a class, but as a dedicated sanctuary for serious practice and profound community connection. AstaYoga is rooted in the powerful and progressive Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition, serving as the authentic home and lineage keeper of the celebrated Rocket Vinyasa system, right here in the city where it was born.
The studio was established with a clear intention: to build community around a shared, systematic, and efficient practice, moving away from the "fluff" and toward real, sustainable physical and mental growth. Here, students—from true beginners to advanced Ashtangis—find that their practice advances "immeasurably" thanks to the commitment of the dedicated teachers. The approach is simple yet profound: if you can breathe, you can engage in this practice. The focus is on linking movement with conscious breathing, known as Ujjayi Pranayama, transforming postures into a moving meditation that is both challenging and deeply fulfilling.
Beyond the mat, AstaYoga embodies the progressive, inclusive spirit of the Bay Area. It proudly Identifies as LGBTQ+ owned and serves as a Transgender safespace, fostering a warm, welcoming, and fundamentally non-judgmental community where all practitioners can truly "drop the shackles of their various identities and just be." This blend of serious, authentic practice with a genuinely inclusive community is what makes AstaYoga an essential part of the San Francisco wellness fabric.
Introduction / Overview
AstaYoga, since its opening in 2009, has championed a practical, no-nonsense approach to the Ashtanga-based system pioneered by their teacher, Larry Schultz. The studio is a vibrant hub for Rocket Vinyasa, a progressive style that takes the structure of the traditional Ashtanga Primary and Intermediate Series and re-sequences them to make advanced postures like inversions and arm balances more accessible through intelligent modification and a spirit of playful exploration.
The studio’s commitment is to the development of a meaningful personal practice. You will find classes here are systematic, working the entire body, and emphasizing the synchronized link between breath and movement (Vinyasa). It’s a place for dedicated students who seek substance over performance and wish to think critically and intelligently about their yoga practice. The challenging yet fun environment is balanced by a strong, supportive community, where rituals like the Sunday primary series followed by chai and hanging out have become a cherished tradition.
The business operates with modern convenience, offering flexible Online classes for those unable to make it into the city, alongside essential Onsite services. For payment, the studio makes it easy for local users, accepting Credit cards, Debit cards, and NFC mobile payments.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The most incredible yoga studio in all of SF for advanced Ashtangis and beginners alike. My practice has advanced immeasurably since coming here 3 years ago thanks to Steve, Gary, and the other incredible instructors. Also has an incredible community - Sunday primary series is always followed by chai and hanging out - it’s become a ritual and sanctuary!
April 20 · Anitha MenonThis place is everything I could want in a yoga studio. The classes are challenging & fun, and the community is warm and welcoming. Do yourself a favor if you want an incredible yoga experience, and go to Asta!
May 16 · Dr. Emily WolbersI have attended class as a traveler three times at this studio and have enjoyed myself each time. They have created a great, relaxed community of people and a room where there no shortage of inspiration for development exists.I enjoyed two classes this last weekend with chai and pastry after the Sunday ashtanga series, a first-for-me experience at a studio. For me, the instructors and community make this a place to which I am certain to return.
March 04 · Ryan HamiltonThe teachers here are quite advanced and practicing with them will challenge you and inspire your own practice. At my Saturday 10am class with Tara, we did a lot of core work at the beginning and the teacher guided us through a sequence with arm balances that linked each pose. We did quite a bit of prep work for handstands as well and I definitely felt that I could hang on a little bit longer in handstand by the end of the class. I didn’t see the teacher give any hands on adjustments in class though, and this is something that I look forward to when I go to yoga class. The studio has a nice lounge area where you check in and a few changing rooms and cubbies to store your things. Because it is located in the Mission, they close or lock the iron gates during class to make sure there are no disturbances. The studio is warmed to about 75 degrees, just enough for you break a sweat and activate your flexibility, but not so warm that you are slipping and sliding in crow pose.Pros1.) Advanced teachers and advanced clientele which means you can grow your own practice further, if that’s what you are looking to do2.) Studio space itself is quite convenient; it’s located near a lot of food options and has a spacious area to hang out before and after class.Cons1.) No showers and only one bathroom; there is often a line to use the bathroom2.) The practice studio’s floor is carpeted which I suppose is better for your joints or minor falls (but a Manduka Pro mat would be sufficient); I went to a Saturday 10am class and everything smelled fresh, but it was the first class of the day. I would imagine that it would be a bit more gross if you had to practice right after a sweaty class.
August 31 · Ling Linthis places kicks my @ss. and listen. i workout like most days i dance and climb and other stuff but like o mg TnT i feel genuinely out of shape taking rocket one. ONE. like what are they even doing in two and three i can't even imagine. but the space is l-o-v-e lovely. very well kept and clean and in a fun part of town. staff are kind and knowledgeable and everyone else in the class is sweet as well. classes are, as i mentioned, genuinely challenging but also great for people looking to get started in yoga. i took my very first class just a couple of months ago. they have plenty of equipment too so don't need to worry about bringing your own mats and stuff. they even have blankets and you know it hits different when you're laying down at the end like shavastanah mm mm mm i'm bouta fall asleep
