Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta Introduce
For residents across Georgia seeking a truly transformative and authentic yoga experience, Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta (AYA) stands as the region's original and most respected center for traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Located in the heart of Atlanta, AYA is not just a studio; it is a dedicated 'shala'—a place of learning—committed to preserving and teaching this challenging and deeply rewarding practice in its most authentic form, as popularized by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
Ashtanga is a physically rigorous and highly structured style of yoga that follows specific, set sequences of postures (asanas) aimed at methodically strengthening, balancing, purifying, and opening the body and mind. The entire practice is linked by a breath-synchronized movement system called Vinyasa, all while maintaining the three places of attention, or 'Tristhana': the breathing system (pranayama), posture (asana), and the looking place (drishti). This method provides purification on three levels: the body, the nervous system, and the mind.
The foundation of the practice, the Primary Series, is known as Yoga Chikitsa (Yoga Therapy) and is designed to detoxify the internal organs, correct structural imbalances, and prepare the student for future series. AYA is highly recommended for "serious yoga practitioners" and anyone looking for a rigorous, dedicated path to physical and spiritual growth. The environment strikes a "perfect blend of structure and serenity," making it an anchor for many local users on their journey toward feeling "stronger, more grounded, and inspired."
Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta is conveniently located in the vibrant and accessible Inman Park neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. This central location makes it a practical destination for practitioners commuting from various parts of the metro Atlanta area.
The exact address is 27 Waddell St NE, Atlanta, GA 30307, USA. This placement is particularly advantageous for Atlanta users who rely on public transportation or enjoy combining their practice with outdoor activity.
Accessibility details for the studio include:
- Walkability and Transit: The studio is within comfortable walking distance of the Inman Park-Reynoldstown MARTA train station (Green and Blue lines), providing easy access for commuters. It is also located near the popular Atlanta BeltLine, offering a perfect opportunity to walk or bike to the shala.
- On-site Amenities: A clean Restroom is available for students.
- Payment Options: The studio accepts common methods of payment, including Credit cards and Debit cards for tuition and class packages. They also accept cash and checks.
Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta is primarily dedicated to the teaching of traditional Ashtanga Yoga, offering instruction in the method’s two distinct formats to accommodate all stages of the practice, from absolute beginners to advanced students.
The core services and class formats include:
- Mysore Style Classes: This is the traditional, individualized method of practicing Ashtanga Yoga. Students arrive within an allotted time window and practice the set sequence at their own pace and breath count. The teacher provides one-on-one guidance, adjustments, and new postures as the student demonstrates readiness, making it the most truly all-levels and individualized form of instruction available.
- Led Primary Series Classes: A teacher-guided class where all students move through the Ashtanga Primary Series together, following the traditional Sanskrit Vinyasa count. These classes are important for students to deepen their understanding of the proper pace, breath, and sequence.
- Beginner Courses: A comprehensive introductory program is offered, typically over four weeks of 90-minute workshops. These semi-private classes teach fundamental concepts—such as Tristana, Sun Salutations, and the Primary Series standing postures—and provide a thorough foundation for entering the daily Mysore practice.
- Workshops and Continuing Education: The studio frequently hosts workshops, sometimes featuring visiting authorized teachers, that delve into the philosophy, pranayama, bandhas, and more subtle aspects of the Ashtanga method and the Yoga Sutras.
The deep lineage and quality of instruction at Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta are what distinguish it as a beacon for traditional yoga in the Georgia area.
- Authentic Lineage and Experience: The shala is known as the original Ashtanga Yoga shala in Georgia. The founder and director, Todd Roderick, is a KPJAYI authorized teacher and direct student of the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, making him the most experienced Ashtanga teacher in the Southeastern United States.
- Focus on the Mysore Method: The emphasis on Mysore-style self-practice allows students to truly internalize the practice, turning the sequence into a moving meditation and fostering deep, personal growth, moving beyond simple physical exercise.
- Highly Supportive and Detailed Instruction: Instructors, including the head teacher and the named assistants (Alex, Carly, Isabella, and Tiffany, as noted by students), are praised for their "attention to detail," "thoughtful adjustments," and ability to "balance encouragement with challenge." This hands-on, individualized approach ensures students build strength and technique safely.
- Welcoming and Structured Community: Students describe the atmosphere as a "welcoming space" and an "excellent shala" that provides a supportive anchor for their journey. The structure of the traditional practice fosters discipline, which is cited as a key factor in students’ ability to achieve "remarkable" physical and mental progress, such as learning the entire Primary Series.
- A Path to Transformation: The practice is recognized for its ability to transform practitioners, both physically—as seen in improvements in strength and flexibility—and mentally, helping individuals feel more "grounded" in their daily lives.

Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta is an unparalleled choice for any Georgia resident seeking a serious, long-term commitment to traditional yoga practice. The studio is worth choosing for three primary reasons: lineage, personalization, and results.
First, the lineage is authentic, with one of the most experienced Ashtanga instructors in the Southeast at the helm. This deep understanding of the method ensures the practice is taught correctly, safely, and with the necessary attention to the subtle details of breath and focus (Tristhana).
Second, the focus on the Mysore style offers a uniquely personalized experience. Instead of being lost in a large group class, students receive one-on-one attention, thoughtful adjustments, and guidance at their own pace, which is critical for sustainable progress and injury prevention, regardless of their starting level. This is why a user, even one year in, noted the rewarding journey of personal transformation.
Finally, the structure and consistency of the Ashtanga method, supported by AYA’s dedicated community, provides tangible, lasting results—leading to profound physical strength, increased flexibility, and a deeper sense of mental groundedness and peace. For those committed to uncovering the full benefits of a deep yoga practice, Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta offers a supportive, legitimate, and highly rewarding path.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Ashtanga Yoga Atlanta is a legit Ashtanga Shaala teaching traditional Ashtanga Yoga. Todd is a very good instructor helping you build upon from wherever you start. His attention to detail and gentle manner makes you look forward to the practice. Over the years he has created a welcoming space. I highly recommend AYA for serious yoga practitioners.
April 04 · Pratik JagadExcellent shala. The environment is a perfect blend of structure and serenity—it doesn’t disappoint. One year ago, I couldn’t imagine how much this practice would transform me. Today, I feel stronger, more grounded, and inspired to continue exploring what Ashtanga has to offer—not just on the mat, but in every facet of my life. This journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has been deeply rewarding. The physical progress—going from barely reaching my knees to touching the floor and then learning the entire primary series—has been remarkable.Todd has been an anchor throughout the year—his ability to balance encouragement with challenge has pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of.A nod to his assistants, Alex, Carly, Isabella, and Tiffany, for their thoughtful adjustments and unwavering support.
January 20 · Donald PowellIf you are looking for a traditional ashtanga shala, this is your place. Todd is an incredible teacher and he truly cares about each student and their practice. Brice, who teaches the introductory workshop, is so knowledgeable, fun and a pleasure to be around. There is no better ashtanga shala in Atlanta.
February 26 · Simone SantosI started at AYA with the beginner course, led by Tiffany, almost a year ago. I learned so much foundational work, as well as information about the history and philosophy of Ashtanga in that course. It took me a few months after I finished to work up the nerve to come to the Mysore classes (all unfounded anxieties). I have now been doing Mysore about 4 to 5 times a week for six months, and the progress has been remarkable. I have had an on and off yoga practice for years, but this practice has altered me both physically and mentally. The work is hard, and it demands more than you think you have, but the sense of accomplishment is unparalleled. Todd is amazing at knowing exactly when and how to push and when to step back, and the shala assistants (Isa, Carly, and Tiffany) are amazing. Atlanta is so fortunate to have such an experienced Ashtanga teacher as Todd and such a welcoming shala as AYA.
January 20 · Joanna HairAlmost 1 year ago in September I took the beginners Ashtanga class with Todd and Brice. I never thought that I could get past half primary series. With basically one on one instruction through Mysore, Todd has led me through full primary. It certainly has been a great challenge and reminds me that through guidance and patient instruction you can far exceed your expectations. By far one of my best experiences!
