One of the key things to understand about this facility is its deep-rooted connection to the community and the tradition of Judo itself. As a part of the Oak Lawn Park District, it's a fixture in the local landscape, easily accessible to many residents. The environment is described as being very supportive, with a strong focus on the fundamental principles of the art. Unlike some more combative martial arts, Judo's emphasis on using an opponent's momentum against them makes it a highly strategic and intelligent form of self-defense. This club seems to embody that philosophy perfectly, as evidenced by the high praise its coaches and students receive.
When people in Illinois are looking for a martial arts dojo, they often prioritize a few things: the quality of the instruction, the safety of the environment, and the overall atmosphere. The Oak Lawn Park District Judo Club appears to excel in all these areas. The coaches, particularly Sensei Glenn, are described with immense passion and expertise. Their dedication to the art is contagious and their coaching abilities are highlighted as being top-tier. For anyone in the Illinois region, this kind of leadership is invaluable.
Another important aspect to consider is the club’s history. The club has a long-standing tradition of excellence, with fond memories dating back to the mid-1980s under previous Senseis like DeVito. This longevity and continued success speak volumes about the quality of the program. It's not a fly-by-night operation; it's a well-established institution that has been serving the community for decades, teaching generations of Illinois residents the art of Judo. This kind of legacy provides a level of trust and assurance that is hard to find elsewhere.
What truly sets a place like the Oak Lawn Park District Judo Club apart is the impact it has on its students. Former students often talk about the life lessons learned—not just how to subdue an opponent, but how to be disciplined, how to be confident, and how to carry oneself with humility and respect. These are skills that extend far beyond the dojo and into everyday life. For families in Illinois, this is a compelling reason to choose this program for their children. It’s an investment in their character as much as it is in their physical abilities.
The reviews also frequently mention the humility and sportsmanship of the students. Watching them compete and then take the time to help up their opponents and bow respectfully is a testament to the values being taught at the club. This kind of positive reinforcement is crucial, especially for young people. It shows that winning is important, but carrying yourself with integrity is even more so. This is the kind of environment that many parents hope to find for their kids' extracurricular activities.
The positive feedback from even out-of-state visitors, who wish they lived closer, is a strong indicator of the club's exceptional reputation. It's clear that the quality of coaching and the positive atmosphere are not just local secrets but are recognized widely. So, for those of you right here in Illinois, you have the advantage of having a truly world-class martial arts program right in your backyard.
In conclusion, the Oak Lawn Park District Judo Club is an excellent option for anyone in Illinois looking to get involved in martial arts. It offers expert instruction, a supportive and disciplined environment, and a focus on practical self-defense and character development. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I first met Sensei Glenn at like 11 pm on a Friday night. We were both finishing setting up for two different grappling tournaments that just so happened to be booked for the same venue, on the same weekend. His event featured the art of Judo and mine was focused on BJJ.I’ve got to admit, I liked Glenn right out the jump. He’s a funny, intelligent, charismatic guy for sure, but what i picked up on immediately was his passion for Judo. This man lives and breathes Judo. His enthusiasm has an almost magnetic effect, at least it did on me.I told him that when I had a break in the action, I’d like to come over and check out his Judo tournament. And that’s what I did, I walked over to the other side of the building to catch some Judo action.I also wanted to see how good his students were. I mean, I wanted to see if his passion for practicing Judo lined up with his coaching abilities. As it turns out, Glenn was as good a coach as he was a competitor, maybe better even. His students won match after match, with ippon after ippon. And they were like, just so humble, taking the time to help opponents up off the mat, and politely bowing to them and the other coaches. It was really cool.I know that’s a long review, but I really wanted to take the time to tell that story, in the hopes that if you're a mom or dad on the fence about putting your child or children into martial arts, you can bring them to the right place. And you'd be hard pressed to find a better dojo than Oak lawn Judo.I live in Maryland, but I assure you, if I lived anywhere near Sensei Glenn, this is where I’d be taking my little boy and girl. Without question.Oh and thanks for the t-shirt guys! It took 6 months to arrive but hey, better late than never right!?
February 26 · Danny IvesI have fond memories of my time learning Judo in the mid 80's at the Oak Lawn Park District under Sensei DeVito. Bless his soul.... Judo is purely self defense and even years after I left my training I found that I could instinctually defend myself. Years after, when needed, I was surprised that I still knew without thought, how to use a bit of strategic leverage to easily subdue my opponent. Yet, probably the most important lesson I learned at such an early age was how to fall correctly which I know saved many potentially broken bones. Judo offered myself confidence, discipline, and I highly recommend this program to all and I wish I lived close enough for my own children to attend.
