In the bustling New York fitness scene, the NYU Brooklyn Athletic Facility is a compelling choice, especially for those affiliated with the university. The most significant reason to choose this gym is its **sense of community and its dedicated purpose**. As one reviewer noted, this gym offers a different vibe than a commercial gym like Equinox, providing a more relaxed and familiar environment. It is a place where you are "around students/your friends," which can be a powerful motivator and make the workout experience more enjoyable and less intimidating.
The gym's specific design, with three separated areas for different types of training, is a major benefit. The existence of a dedicated cardio room, a free weights room, and a gymnasium means that members can easily structure their routines to fit their needs. The availability of a full-size basketball court is a huge plus, offering an opportunity for team sports and recreational activities that many commercial gyms lack. This diversity in offerings makes it a valuable resource for a wide range of athletic interests, from lifting and cardio to playing team sports.
However, it is important to address the feedback about the facility's size and cleanliness. While one reviewer expressed frustration with wait times and maintenance issues, another offered a balanced perspective, suggesting that the smaller size also means fewer people, which can be a positive. The gym may not have the vast, pristine facilities of a high-end commercial gym, but it offers a functional, no-frills environment that gets the job done. The key is to manage expectations and to understand that this is a college athletic facility, not a luxury fitness club. For students, the complimentary access is an unbeatable value proposition, providing all the necessary equipment without the high monthly fees of a commercial gym. For faculty and staff, the membership fees are also likely more affordable than comparable options in the area.
In conclusion, for those in the NYU community in Brooklyn, the NYU Brooklyn Athletic Facility is a practical, convenient, and cost-effective choice. It provides all the necessary equipment for a solid workout, offers diverse recreational options, and fosters a strong sense of community. While it may have some limitations in space and equipment, its unique atmosphere and focus on serving its academic members make it a worthy and popular option for anyone in the New York area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1it has decent variety of machines to work with but due to its small size there is only one machine per each type which usually causes long wait times. It is not very clean and not well mainted, especially the changing rooms. I have been seeing the same dirt on the floor for 6 months!
February 27 · Tolga DimlioğluLacking in equipment, but everyone whining most definitely has only been to equinox with their daddy's membership. The ventilation is good enough for a basement gym and the small size also means much less people compared to 404 or Palladium. Just bring a lock because you will have to lock your gym bag in the locker.
October 09 · Andy WuGym is very makeshift but gets the job done. Several basic machines missing, such as a smith machine, and no steam room and/or sauna. Good in a pinch, but I’m looking for an off-campus membership.
November 03 · jae michaelBEWARE they close HALF AN HOUR EARLIER THAN STATED. THEY WILL GET ANGRY WITH YOU IF YOU DON'T EVACUATE THE WORKOUT ROOM AT THAT EXACT MOMENT AND THEY WILL KICK YOU OUT. This happened to me during the weekend. When I returned to the locker rooms because we were literally kicked out, one of the girls had to continue her workout inside the locker room because staff did not allow her to finish inside of the actual gym even when they physically close the doors half an hour later. I have never experienced this at any gyms I have ever gone to... I don't understand why they write that they close at X time when really they force you to stop half an hour earlier. Also this gym is in a basement and poorly built. Aside from this, every time you need to enter any of the workout rooms (every room is separated from the other) they have you prove you are vaccinated and show your id which is ridiculous since you need to show your id and sign in to even enter the building to begin with. This constant tampering is very unnecessary. Obviously everyone is vaccinated and approved by the time they reach the gym. Ridiculous.
March 01 · Calín AnnaCalled up the facility to know their timings, said it would be open till 06:30PM. Took an hour long train to the gym only to reach there by 5PM and see that the gym was closed. Textbook miscommunication example.
