LA Fitness Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For residents across the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, including Hawthorne, Gardena, and Lawndale, finding a comprehensive health club that supports every aspect of a wellness journey is essential. LA Fitness at 4949 W 147th St in Hawthorne, CA, delivers exactly that: a full-service, amenity-rich gym designed to cater to diverse fitness goals, from competitive swimming to restorative yoga, and intense functional training. Known regionally as one of the better facilities in the local network, this LA Fitness location provides the space, equipment, and classes necessary to power your routine.
This club offers a welcoming environment where you can truly "Exercise Your Options®." Whether you are looking to lift serious weight, engage in dynamic group classes, or simply unwind in the sauna after a busy California workday, the facility is equipped for it all. From the extensive weight lifting and resistance training areas to the specialized studios for Pilates and Yoga, LA Fitness Hawthorne is built on the philosophy of offering variety. It’s a place where seasoned gym-goers can push their limits, and beginners can find the certified personal training and functional exercises they need to start strong.
However, as with any popular gym in the highly populated South Bay, local users should note its popularity. The weight lifting areas, in particular, can become quite busy during peak after-work hours, typically between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM. This high traffic underscores the gym’s appeal but may require members with strict weight-training schedules to plan their visits accordingly. The commitment of this club to continually address and improve the member experience—as seen in the recent replacement of a key safety mirror in the parking structure—demonstrates its dedication to maintaining a quality environment for the local community.

Features / Highlights
The unique combination of facilities at the Hawthorne club makes it a standout choice for local South Bay fitness enthusiasts:
- Aquatic Access: Having a Junior Olympic Swimming pool onsite is a significant highlight, catering to swimmers, triathletes, and those who benefit from low-impact Aqua Fit classes—a valuable offering not found in every gym.
- Sports and Recreation: The inclusion of a full-size Basketball court expands the fitness possibilities beyond standard weight and cardio, allowing for recreational league play and competitive sports training.
- Group Fitness Variety: The sheer number of classes, from the highly praised Yoga class to intense Cycle Zone and Zumba sessions, offers members a free and dynamic way to vary their weekly routines and maintain motivation.
- Relaxation Amenities: The presence of a Sauna provides an ideal way to relax muscles, aid recovery, and de-stress, adding a spa-like element to the standard gym membership.
- Commitment to Improvement: Recent customer feedback has resulted in responsive action, such as the replacement of a critical safety mirror in the parking area, demonstrating an effort by the management to maintain safety and address member concerns.
It is worth noting that while the amenities are excellent, members report that vigilance is necessary in certain high-use areas, specifically noting the need for better sanitation and drainage in the sauna and locker room area, as well as an occasional odor issue in the basketball court. Being aware of these minor operational challenges can set proper expectations for new members.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1One of the better LA fitness in area, BUT the weight lifting area is too busy from 4-9pm and virtually all major machines will have 2-4 people waiting in line for them. The basketball courts are fine to run on but there is a HORRIBLE smell like someone left wet sweaty towels in there and they grew mold. This area could definitely use some cleaning as it gets highly used every day I’ve visited.Additionally the drainage in the sauna/locker room area is very weak and benches will be wet and unsanitary for very long time after use.
August 09 · Alejandro TorunoI love the yoga class, which is the only exercise I do there. Since May 1st, parking has been near impossible. In the last 6 weeks, I have gone to 3 classes. The other times I have to turn around and go home. When I called the gym to inquire if there were any negotiations with nearby stores to use some of their parking (because I had been told that in the past) I was told no, there are no plans to do that. The attitude was so cavalier and unprofessional. I was told there was a new manager coming, and hopefully, maybe they might do something. I also pointed out that the visibility mirror has been missing from the top level of the parking structure for 3 months and that it is a safety hazard. I was told the part is on order and on a list of things to fix. A visibility mirror can be ordered online. I checked. I have never encountered such an uncaring attitude from a business. I have been a member since 1984, but if nothing changes by the time my renewal is up in November, I will not renew. There are plenty of gyms in the South Bay that provide enough parking without safety hazards.Update: The safety mirror has now been replaced. When I went to the yoga class last Wednesday morning, there were actually a few parking spots up on the top level. I don't know what changed, but I hope it lasts.
June 27 · Karen YoderI am currently visiting California for two months and, as a potential future member, I signed up for a 3-day free guest pass to try out the LA Fitness facilities. Everything was in order — I had my valid QR code ready to be scanned at the entrance. However, upon arrival, I was told by the front desk associate named Sunny that I must be a California resident to use the guest pass. This condition is nowhere stated in the terms and conditions of the guest pass on your website or confirmation email. When I politely asked Sunny to show me where this rule is written, she was unable to do so. Instead, she escalated the situation unnecessarily and even threatened to call security — which was completely unwarranted, especially given that I was calm, respectful, and simply seeking clarification.
July 20 · Jo Beatz (DaFlippaJo)One of the best LA fitnesses in the area, though it is pretty packed most of the time. The staff is really friendly and Stefanie the supervisor went above and beyond to help me with an issue with my membership. She helped me achieve the best possible solution in a really inconvenient situation. Thank you Stefanie and LA Fitness for honoring my loyalty to LA Fitness!!
April 22 · Boni MThere is plenty of machines.Mondays are the busiest. You got to get that work out.Thursdays are less busy. The only drawback is the parking. It’s free parking all around as well.People are kind here the staff is also friendly. Plenty of restrooms. There is no towel service. If you use the lockers you have to bring a lock
