Friends of the Gym Introduce
## Introduction / Overview
For residents in Washington, particularly in the dynamic city of Seattle, finding a fitness space that aligns with personal values of inclusivity and respect can be as important as the quality of the workout itself. **Friends of the Gym (FotG)**, located in the bustling Ballard neighborhood, stands out as a unique and deeply intentional fitness community. Identifying proudly as an **LGBTQ+ owned** business, FotG is dedicated to deconstructing traditional, often toxic, gym culture to create a truly welcoming and **body neutral space**.
This facility goes beyond the standard gym model, operating as a full-service fitness hub that is also recognized as a **Health consultant**, **Personal trainer**, and dedicated **Training center**. Their mission is centered on empowering individuals to connect with their bodies through movement in a positive and affirming way. As one member shared, they feel "so lucky this is my gym," emphasizing the high quality of coaching and the exceptional, judgment-free atmosphere.
At Friends of the Gym, fitness is not about conforming to external standards or chasing fleeting aesthetics; it's about building genuine strength, learning safely, and fostering a supportive community. The training philosophy focuses on progressive overload through consistent strength work, with coaches ensuring everyone—from those "new to a gym space" to "experienced iron pumpers"—gets a challenging and effective session tailored to their level. The small class sizes are described as being "almost like a small-group personal training session," ensuring high-level feedback and form correction in every workout.

## Services Offered
Friends of the Gym offers a curated suite of services designed for maximum safety, effectiveness, and personalized attention, focusing heavily on strength and community-based training.
The specialized training and service options include:
- **Group Coaching** / **Classes**: Expert-led group sessions that are intentionally kept small (often limited to 6-7 people) to provide extensive feedback and form correction, ensuring members never "worry that I’m going to overdo it or hurt myself." Classes are varied to "keep things fresh" and are suitable for all experience levels.
- **Strength Training**: The core programming revolves around scientifically-backed strength work, focusing on progressive overload to build muscle, bone density, and long-term health, deliberately detached from traditional weight-loss-focused narratives.
- **Personal Trainer** / **Team Services**: Offering highly personalized one-on-one coaching and customized training programs designed to meet individual goals. The small-group class experience often mimics the attention received in a personal training session, providing excellent value.
- **Gym Access**: Dedicated time slots for members who prefer to use the facility and equipment independently for their own training, with access capped at a very small number of individuals (e.g., 3 people at a time) to prevent overcrowding and ensure space.
- **Online Classes**: Providing flexibility for Washington residents, offering virtual training options and online content to ensure movement exploration and strength building can continue remotely.
- **Special Events**: Community-building events and workshops designed to deepen members' knowledge of movement, fitness, and health, further cementing the gym's community focus.
- Tiered Membership Pricing: Offering a unique, community-focused tiered pricing structure (Tier 1: Pay What You Can, Tier 2: Suggested Rate, Tier 3: Pay It Forward) to ensure their services are as financially accessible as possible for all members.

## Features / Highlights
Friends of the Gym's most compelling features revolve around its radical commitment to inclusivity, safety, and a superior coaching experience—qualities that set it apart in the Seattle fitness landscape.
Distinguishing Features and Highlights:
- **Radical Inclusivity and Safety**: Explicitly identifying as an **LGBTQ+ owned** business and a **Transgender safespace**, the gym actively works to deconstruct "toxic fitness culture." This makes it one of the most affirming places in the Seattle area for queer bodies and marginalized identities.
- **Body Neutral Environment**: Highly praised by members for being the "most body neutral space" they've ever experienced, with a philosophy that focuses on **strength training** and movement exploration rather than on weight loss or body shaming. This fosters a healthy and sustainable relationship with exercise.
- Superior Coaching Attention: All **Classes** are intentionally **small** (limited capacity of 6-7 folks), meaning the experience is "almost like a small-group personal training session." This ensures high coach-to-member ratios for consistent feedback, technique refinement, and injury prevention.
- Commitment to Public Health: The gym has been recognized by members for its "accessible and careful workout space," including offering weekly **'mask required' class** options, which demonstrates a high level of "public safety and neighborly care" within the community.
- Expert and Engaging Coaches: Instructors, like Olli (an "incredible workout instructor and coach"), are highly knowledgeable and adept at leading classes that can be tailored for all experience levels, keeping workouts diverse and challenging to "keep things fresh."
- Transparent and Accessible Pricing: The unique tiered membership system is designed to provide financial accessibility, allowing individuals to choose a rate that fits their capacity while still supporting the fair compensation of coaches and business operations.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I found Friends of the Gym earlier this year and have tried to attend the weekly 'mask required' class every week. First of all, it's so great to have an accessible and careful workout space in the city and I am so grateful to FotG for that! Working out with folks that take public safety and neighborly care seriously is so affirming. Also, the class is led by Olli - an incredible workout instructor and coach. The workouts switch up all the time which keep things fresh. Olli leads the class in a way that anyone can get a ton out of it - whether you're new to a gym space, an experienced iron pumper, or anything in between. I love going to FotG and am so glad it exists!
July 08 · Jordan FloresI feel so lucky this is my gym! I’ve learned so much from the excellent coaches. The classes are really small so it’s almost like a small-group personal training session. I always get feedback and never worry that I’m going to overdo it or hurt myself. I’ve learned tons! It’s also the most body neutral space I think I’ve ever been in and I really appreciate that. Great fit for anyone who wants to lift weights without all the toxic fitness culture around you. It’s just nice people, picking up heavy stuff and putting it back down and occasionally doing a group frolic around the room for cardio. Highly recommend!
April 19 · Sam KellyI never felt like I fit in at gyms or knew the first thing about working out. I had never even picked up a barbell before and now I'm getting into powerlifting and feel the best I've ever felt in my body. Olli and the rest of the crew at Friends of the Gym have built an incredibly inclusive, encouraging, and happy environment. If you're thinking about finding a gym but are as nervous as I was, you should definitely give them a chance!
April 26 · Kristopher StewartFriends of the Gym is a genuinely inclusive, body-neutral space where I’ve always felt welcome. The coaches are incredibly supportive and consistently offer modifications without hesitation, which has been essential for me. The small class sizes and thoughtful workouts make it easy to focus on what feels right for my body without pressure. It’s a rare and refreshing kind of gym.
May 07 · Hannah RanneyThis gym is so lovely and inclusive! Their classes are great for all bodies and ability levels, and open gym access works well if you're comfortable working out independently. Everyone I've met here has been kind and I don't feel the social pressure that can happen in typical gyms. This place is special and I highly recommend it, especially if other fitness spaces haven't worked for you.
