For generations of New Yorkers, the YMCA has been more than just a place to work out; it has been a pillar of the community, fostering a culture of health, well-being, and social connection. The Dodge YMCA, located in the heart of Brooklyn, stands as a testament to this legacy. This isn’t a trendy, boutique gym but a robust, comprehensive fitness center designed to serve the diverse needs of the local population. From individual workouts to family-friendly activities, the Dodge YMCA offers a wide array of amenities and programs, making it a central hub for physical activity and community engagement. The focus here is on creating an inclusive environment where people of all ages and fitness levels can pursue their goals in a supportive and welcoming setting.
One of the defining characteristics of the YMCA is its commitment to culture and community. As one member notes, they are a "huge fan of the YMCA" and "enjoy the culture and the community." This sense of belonging is a key element that sets it apart from other fitness clubs in New York City. The Dodge YMCA is known for being "big, clean and offers so many activities," providing a one-stop-shop for fitness and recreation. For many New Yorkers, having access to a single location that caters to various interests, from swimming to strength training, is a significant convenience. This multi-faceted approach makes it an ideal place for individuals, families, and teens alike to stay active and engaged throughout the year. The community focus also means that members often find a familiar and friendly face, which can make the fitness journey much more enjoyable and sustainable.
While the Dodge YMCA is celebrated for its community atmosphere, it is important to acknowledge that, like any large organization, individual experiences can vary. A key part of choosing a gym is understanding all facets of its operations. Some members have had incredibly positive experiences, particularly with personal training. One review highlights how their "life changed" after starting private workout sessions with a personal trainer named Stefan, who is described as "so knowledgeable about the human body" and "very educated... also a very thoughtful person." However, another review expresses significant concerns about the same trainer's conduct, citing instances of unprofessionalism and a lack of gym etiquette, which they felt "compromised" their workout experience. This feedback underscores the importance of a gym’s management in ensuring all staff members uphold the high standards of professionalism and respect that a community-focused organization like the YMCA should embody.
The Dodge YMCA's address is 225 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11201, USA, placing it in an incredibly accessible and central part of Brooklyn. The location is a major advantage for New York City residents, as it is easily reachable via public transportation. The YMCA is a short walk from the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center subway station, a major transportation hub that serves the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, Q, R, and W subway lines, as well as the Long Island Rail Road. This makes it convenient for people living and working across Brooklyn and even Manhattan. The facility’s accessibility is further enhanced by its wheelchair-accessible entrance and wheelchair-accessible restroom, ensuring that the gym is open and welcoming to people with varying mobility needs. The central location and public transit options make it a practical choice for daily workouts.
Given that the Dodge YMCA is a membership-based organization, a membership is required to access its services and facilities. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I am a huge fan of the YMCA. I enjoy the culture and the community. The Dodge is big, clean and offers so many activities. My life changed when I started having private work-out sessions.Stefan, is a personal trainer… and he is so knowledgeable about the human body. He is very educated… also very thoughtful person.
July 24 · Jennifer SzlezingerI’ve been going to this gym for over 5 years, but my experience over the past year has gone downhill — mainly because of one personal trainer named Stefan, who is consistently inconsiderate and unprofessional.I’ve seen him leave weight plates without re-racking them on occasion. He once took a handle I was actively using, even though I had clearly stepped away for just a second to refill my water. My phone was still at the station to indicate I was using the equipment, and there were several other handles available. During a training session with a client, he entered the area I was working out in, forcing me to move without any acknowledgment or apology. And he has walked in front of me very close to me while I was lifting. There was plenty of space around us, yet he chose to walk through my workout. which could of caused on injury. This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable, especially from a YMCA trainer who should be setting an example for gym etiquette and professionalism. It has made my time at the gym frustrating, when it should be a place to focus and feel supported. No member should have their workout experience compromised by a trainer's repeated lack of respect and awareness. He's unprofessional and should not be a personal trainer who has no respect for gym members.
April 10 · PaulThe Dodge YMCA is the best Y in Brooklyn. The facilities are beautiful and the staff is awesome. Just today I forgot to bring sneakers and Gabe at the front desk kindly let me borrow his for my workout, just another example of how the staff goes above and beyond.
June 27 · Tim JobloveHands down the best YMCA in New York City. Has a pool, a full size basketball court with six hoops, and a gigantic gym with weights, treadmills, stationary bicycles, bench presses and yoga mats. Also the YMCA is next to a sweetgreen, Bareburger, Blossom ice cream, and a mall. The only reason I didn't give this place five stars is because the gym is always packed and most of the time the gym is used for classes, which doesn't make any sense because they can have a class in the dance room. Overall, good location and good place.
June 23 · Slava YaryshkinWould give them a negative review if I could. They literally lied while signing up and are now going back on their word re: membership dues. Incredibly predatory behavior. DO NOT COME HERE AND DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING THEY SAY. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING!
