Armstrong Pavilion Introduce
For residents of Indianapolis, particularly in the Decatur Township area, finding a local gym and community sports hub that is both accessible and affordable is a top priority. The Armstrong Pavilion, located on the Decatur Central High School campus, serves as a vital resource for the entire community. It’s more than just a typical gym; it's a public recreation facility provided by the Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Decatur Township for the use of people of all ages, from middle school students to senior citizens. This unique partnership between the school district and the community creates a friendly and familiar environment where locals can pursue their health and wellness goals close to home.
The philosophy behind the Armstrong Pavilion is centered on community well-being. It was opened in 1989 with the purpose of providing a space where people could maintain their health, build friendships, and stay active year-round. While it serves as a training facility for various Decatur Township school sports teams, it also opens its doors to the public with a membership. This multi-purpose use makes it a dynamic and often bustling facility, where community members and students alike share a passion for sports and fitness. As a community-centric space, the Armstrong Pavilion is known for being a place where lasting friendships are formed and where people are encouraged to stay active, regardless of their age or fitness level.
The Armstrong Pavilion is conveniently situated at 5251 Kentucky Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46221, USA. Its location on the Decatur Central High School campus makes it a well-known landmark in the area. Accessibility is a key feature of the facility, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. These accommodations ensure that the gym is open to a wide range of individuals, providing necessary support for those with mobility challenges. The ease of access, combined with its local setting, makes it a practical choice for anyone in the southwestern part of Indianapolis looking for a nearby facility to stay active and healthy.
The services offered at the Armstrong Pavilion are designed to cater to a variety of athletic and fitness needs, with a strong focus on team sports and general fitness.
Basketball Courts: The facility features basketball courts, providing a space for individuals and teams to shoot hoops, play pickup games, or practice. The courts are a popular spot for both scheduled games and casual use by members.
Volleyball Court: For volleyball enthusiasts, a dedicated court is available for practice and play. This service is particularly beneficial for local teams and groups looking for an indoor space to hone their skills.
Weight Room: In addition to court sports, the pavilion offers a weight room with a variety of cardio and weight equipment. This area is equipped with machines, sit-up boards, chin-up bars, and more, providing a space for members to engage in strength training and cardiovascular workouts.
Indoor Track: The facility also includes an 1/8-mile rubber-surface indoor track. This is a significant benefit for runners and walkers, especially during Indiana's cold winter months, offering a safe and joint-friendly surface to get in their miles.
Individualized Exercise Plans: The Armstrong Pavilion's staff is available to help members set up individualized exercise plans, providing a level of personalized guidance that can be very helpful for those new to a fitness routine or with specific health goals.
Beyond the core services, the Armstrong Pavilion has a number of features and highlights that enhance its value to the community.
Community Focus: The fact that it is a public recreation facility for the entire community is its biggest highlight. It’s a place where senior citizens can walk the track and get their exercise while school sports teams practice in the same building, creating a multi-generational environment.
Affordability: The facility offers memberships at affordable rates, with different pricing tiers for adults, seniors, and students, making it an accessible option for people on various budgets.
Amenities: The gym is equipped with essential amenities, including restrooms and, as noted in public reviews, it is not a huge facility, which can make it feel less intimidating than a large stadium.
Payment Options: For convenience, the gym accepts debit cards and NFC mobile payments, simplifying the process of paying for memberships.

What makes it worth choosing is its unique position as a community-focused public recreation center. Its affordability and accessibility, including wheelchair accommodations, make it a welcoming space for a diverse group of people. While some reviews mention that the courts and facilities might show some age, the core value of the pavilion lies in its purpose: to provide a convenient, multi-purpose space for locals to stay active and connected. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a nice gym. We watched my son's winter percussion and a boys basketball game. Not a huge gym so all seats are good.
March 06 · Mark BarnesMy daughter's team played some games here. This isn’t a good facility. Courts are very old and scuffed up. There is no seating for parents to watch and no scoreboard other than a portable one that can't be seen. Almost no heat so it was freezing the 3 hours we were here. Parking is also difficult. I hope we don't come here again.
November 24 · Bobby WellsThis facility was probably really nice when it was built. But it has been used and abused since. The curtains have huge tears from the baseballs being thrown into them at high rates of speed. The floors are scuffed and filthy. It needs a little love and a little attention. This is an excellent addition to the community. We should be taking better care of it.
December 18 · Me NoNo seating available for spectators during a volleyball tournament.
April 07 · Traci ClodfelderNice facility, went to watch my granddaughter's volleyball tournament. Too loud for an old man!
